what with all the dual core and quad core CPUs on the market and apparent trend to go only multi-core in the future isn't there any decent software on the market that would take advantage of this?

Otherwise whats the point of marketing multi-core processors??

I'm looking for a multi-core video editing program ... any other worthwhile multicore software pointers also appreciated :)

also don't games like HL2 etc have multi-core patches? surely it should be simple matter of telling the game to use BOTH cores instead of just one??

Well Windows XP/Vista can make use of multiple core processors. There are some programs that are coded to take advantage of multi-cores but programming for this is quite difficult and it'll take some time. I think some games can be "confused" into using 2 or more cores as one processor.

As for the point of them. Well its what the processor industry is doing. They develop new technologies all the time. Just because the software isn't 100% there doesn't mean they stop developing stuff for it and wait. The processor industry develop new technology that needs new software written to handle it. Then the software industry (games, OSs, programs etc) write new software that need more powerful processors. They feed off each other to sustain a worldwide demand for their products.

just about any high end video editing (ie premiere, avid etc) software utilises more than one core. Most 3d programs. We did actually do a thread on this a while back.

3d rendering can use multiple cores, for example when i do a render i see 4 little boxes working instead of one (Q6600)

I've also got music software thats multicore capable. Hopefully such programs will become much more prominent in the future
