Hey all,
I've been asked to spec my dad a multi room music system for his office and was wondering if anyone knew of some good systems. At the moment, I'm not too sure about budget but I'd like to hear all the options. I've come across the SONOS wireless system which looks pretty cool but is expensive: http://www.a3-digital.com/index.asp
If you know of any other systems, could you let me know? There aren't many requirements apart from the office is pretty big so would need multiple speakers. Wires aren't really a problem so fire away. Would prefer something that streamed digital music (from mp3 or similar) rather than CD but open to suggestions.
Cheers

Depends upon the overall requirements.
An option could be a music server, linked by something like a squeezebox to a local amp and pair of speakers.
The problem with any type of system like this is the sheer cost of all the cabling, control boxes and installation.
Frankly, it's probably cheaper and easier to buy a cheapy Denon Dm33 (or whatever they're upto) for each room.

With all due respect Andy, the above system doesn't quite meet the functional requirements laid out in the opening post.

errrrr think you listed the wrong bits ;) !

I have a LINN Multi room set up, Main room plus two others.
You have what ever set up you want in the main room, then use a "Line Driver" to send the signal around the building, uses special pin out on CAT5 cable, to "Line Receiver" and "Room Control Unit" in the receiving room. Which is then fed into the local power amp and speakers.
You can get more complicated, but that's how a simple basic set up works.

It's a very simple set up to use, sounds superb, probably the best on the market. and is ***** expensive, unless you know what your doing and pick stuff up on auction and learn how to install it...... guess what I did ;)

Worth every penny if you share the house with a family and they watch soaps in the main room !!!!

Fair commemt, mine's clearly not a multi room system - its a hi-fi which is some thing thats lost with multi speaker systems. My point was that if you want a multi room system second to none, you go to Linn. Just make sure you've got a bank balance with six zeros on the end if it!!!!! lol

He isnt after a multi speaker system in one room, therefore other than signal degradation between rooms it is still Hi-Fi.

Im going to have to ask you this - do you have the faintest idea what you are on about?

I do not like the Linn sound - should I go to Linn for my multi-room system?

Yeah, you've got it. I'm after a multi room system not a multi speaker system for one room. I think I've complicated it more than necessary now...
I've also looked at the Yamaha system and that seems to look quite nice although I think it's a bit older than the Sonos one I mentioned. Anyone have any experiences with either?

The later Linn stuff does not have "a sound", it just plays music better than anything else....go have a dem !!! ;)

Multi room or multi speaker, they got that licked as well !!! :D

Hey, this is only a forum - chill out. LINN make the finest multiroom systems there is:

I have plenty idea of what i'm on about. I'm also not rude!

Yep sure is good, the control panels, RCU's, are a little dated in there functionality now, but the flip side is they are simple and easy to use, which I happen to think is good, don't need a display like mission control !! That said other control panels I believe can be integrated in to the Knekt. Rumour has it also they are working on a revamp of the system, may be later in the year, but who can tell.
....Probably the only pitch accurate multi room system about.....If you make updates in the main room, your can here the improvement in all the remote rooms as well, source first still works ;)

Thats right, there's also a big firmware/ software upgrade come out not so long ago but be warned..... Aktiv cards in LK100 poweramps aren't compatible with the new software. Ask my mate, he'll be happy to tell you how brassed off he is now his LK100 Aktiv quad doesn't work!!! lol.

That's actual makes no sense at all, you having a wind up or joke ??? or just pulling random models numbers from the an old Linn catalogue !!! LK100's don't have any software, they are a power amps !!! They use mono aktiv cards, which are different to the later Stereo cards used in stuff like LK140's, and has now changed again to the stuffed used in the new Chakra amps ..... Do try and keep up ;) hahahaha
