currently have a sapphire 6950 2gb dirt 3 edition, and have managed to snap up another for 50 quid, i run 2 screens currently, and want to add a third, is there any way to do it without having to buy an active display port adapter when i have the 2nd card installed?

What's the problem with buying an extra active display port adapter?
If it works, then it works...
(I'm not meaning to be flippant, but my own experience of running 3 screens was that the active display adapter worked without a hitch)

its just something iv been toying with, its not for gaming really, its more for when im browsing the web listenin to music an other stuff, was just wonderin if it would allow me to plug it in to the otherr card and have the third screen working

As rtho782 said, you'll be able to run the third screen off the second card but not if you enable Crossfire. That said, if you're not enabling Crossfire and merely using the second card to run an additional screen, why not sell the 6950 and use a 5450/6450 instead as that will do the same job using less power/noise and you'll probably make a profit even buying the 5450/6450 brand new!
My advice would be to get an active displayport adapter (£20 new or some on the Bay for £5-£10) and run 3 screens off your crossfired cards and enjoy better frame rates in games (and maybe even try out Eyefinity gaming
) or swap the second 6950 for the cheapest/lowest powered card you can find to just run the third screen from that if your motherboard doesn't have an onboard socket you could use.

Yes, but it will be more like 2 screens with enabled crossfire and 3 screens with crossfire disabled.

True. Wonder if it would work properly with primary screen on GPU1 and the other two screens on GPU2? That should give Crossfire on = 1 screen, Crossfire off = 3 screen in theory.
Kiel, when you've got the card and screens up and running, let us know how it goes. Sounds like an usual setup - the best kind in my opinion!
