Im in the process of reducing the resources of many VMs that have been over specced. 2008 isnt a problem, but when you change a 2003 server down to 1 vcpu, it keeps the multi-core HAL.

There are various posts around concerning this, but I'm wondering if anyone here has come across this issue in their work and did they just ignore it, or change the HAL to uni-core?

I know I can change it in safemode etc, but its a lot of mucking about, and I'm doing this to production DC's so its not so simple as taking a snap before changing stuff.

I don't know the awnser but you have the luxury to snapshot/clone the VM.

This means you can take it to a test server and see what it will do.

We used to go to great trouble to ensure that servers were installed with the multi-core HAL even when only a single processor was installed. Everything worked okay and it made later CPU upgrades a lot easier.

This was with 2003 huh? So I guess you never saw any problems?

I did a Veeam One report today, and it said we could save around 480 vcpu's across the whole estate because 95% were over committed.

If you are worried about the Prod DC's why don't you build a new VM with server installed to requirement and then transfer the roles across to that?

Just a thought, extra work but might be a good idea to build a clean box.
