Probably looking at a good 12"/15" ported subwoofer, best as possible since you only can have one, best to have several dB of headroom so it'll sound better and no risk of damaging sub
Is the room open up to other rooms? If so you'd need to have the TOTAL open area...not just your main room.

Yeah, it's the issue with open plan living room/kitchens. I might look to split the room into 2 in the future if it gets annoying. Ultimately there's only 2 of us, so it shouldn't be too noisy, but there's always compromises like someone cooking whilst the other watches tv and the smells etc drafting through.
Small update.
I've got sign off for on wall speakers instead of in wall, as the sound leakage would be annoying. Gone with the Dali Sonik on walls

Really liked the look of the Heco 44F, but they're a lot bigger.
Bought a Marantz Cinema 70s, and some Dali Phantom E60 in ceiling speakers which will act as rear surrounds. For the time being i'm holding off on a subwoofer until i have a better idea of requirements. Ideally a slimline one like the Kef T2 would work, but the price is pretty hefty for what it is.
Have ordered some 8" Taga RB950's for the kitchen. Currently debating whether to also wire these to the Marantz or keep them separate using a Wiim amp.
For my office, i've pre-ordered some Indiana Line Utah 8's. These are amazing. The plan is to paid them up with either a Nad C3050 or pick up an old Densen DM10 amp. That's for a future step though. For now i've ordered a Wiim amp which does an "ok" job of driving them as they're high sensitivity.
Think i'm fully settled on the multiple Wiim amps. Just seems to give better functionality. Also figure i might try and use a single amp for the bedroom/bathroom in mono to start with. Wish i'd bought a few of them during Black Friday last year!

One option I use, for speakers some Linn Knekt ceiling speakers, a Linn Roomamp, hooked up to a Logitech Squeezebox.
The Squeezebox doesn't have the best phono output, I have used one with a DAC that totally transformed the sound, it's probably not an issue with ceiling speakers. As for a DAC I use in the kitchen a Denon RCD-M41DAB that combination when playing WAV or FLAC files.
Another option I've used is an AV amp in the main zone and then 2 zones can work independently, for a 3rd or 4th zone you can always use a tape loop, but in the zone you are listening you would need an amp with volume controls as a tape loop will be line level.
