Having the unfortunate job of having to regularly use a combined printer and scanner at work with Windows, I'd say forget combo devices and just buy a separate printer and scanner.
I would suggest u have a look on ubuntu under printers and see if any of the printer/scanner combo's you like are on the supported drivers
Then before you make a purchase put a post on ubuntu and see if anyone has any experience with it and see if it was easy to set up or a nightmare and then you'll have ** answer
I a printer scanner combo, got printer working with completely different drivers to my printer (Known problem with my printer and fix was to use another epson printer driver) and i havn't tried to set up the scanner - but thats because i hardly use it to be honest and when i do i just boot into windows (Not practical but personally its not a big problem for me)
