Right, i have been set the task of finding a new computer for my dad.

His uses,

  • Photoshop
  • Desktop Publishing (brochure/catalogue design for his business)
  • Web
  • Word processing ect

Now, as far as i'm aware, the only real advantage of having a mac these days is to take advantage of some of the mac only sound software. In terms of graphic design and photo work it is much of a muchness these days. Am i correct in thinking this?

As macs and PC's (roughly) share the same hardware these days the only difference is the OS and software.

Now take away the OS as this is not important for us. So, in terms of software for his uses (above) we are most likely going to use an adobe CS4 for photo editing and desktop publishing. This is available on both mac and PC.

I could buy better/faster hardware for much less if i were to get him a PC. And as the software is more or less the same, what advantage would a Mac offer?

My thinking is that the mac would be slower, costing more money.

I welcome any advice on the matter. Please correct me if i have made any mistakes and feel free to add on any information you may think will help me.

No fan boy comments please.

Thank you in advance.

Gil.

Hi there,

I am moving over from the MAC to PC for my photoshop/desktop publishing.

My mac is about 6 years old and served me well but when i went to buy a new machine i could not justify the costs, your talking over £2k for a decent spec without a montior, you don't even get RAID as standard.

I bought an i7 cpu, 6gig of ram, 125GB SSD (not even available as an option when buying a G5), 750w PSU, a good case (fractal design), logitec KB & Mouse, samsung 24" monitor ATI 1GB 4850 video card. All for around £1400

Windows 7 is good, not as polished as OSX but its fast and a joy to use.

Also your dad might want to use Corel Draw to compile his catalogue which is stuck on version 11 for OSX and may not work with future updates to the OS.

Well the hardware is fairly similiar these days so it comes down to preferance of the OS.

And price of course.
