Multiplayer games that are free to play?

Hi all, need some help as I am going to be running a games club at my school but need to find some decent older multiplayer games that can be played networked.

The hardware is Pentum E2200 @ 2.2ghz with 2GB of RAM with Intel G33/31 gfx.

I was thinking about older games like Q3 but not sure if it is free these days with the introduction of the online version.

Any suggestions welcome.
 
tbh, I suspect even QuakeLive would struggle on G33 graphics, it only just suffices for Windows Aero!

Quake3 itself isn't free but there are a ton of clones made using the open source source code. UrbanTerror is also an awesome mod for Q3 (actually it's a free standalone game now).

That said, the Q3 engine will struggle on that kind of hardware. Your graphics cards are really limiting you sadly.

I'm actually struggling to think of something that is both free and able to run on that kind of hardware :S
 
EA made some of the old command and conquer games free a while back.

I think these were c&c 1,red alert and tiberian sun.

Grand theft auto 1 and 2 are freeware also.
 
Cool, thanks for the replies so far. We have had CS 1.6 running fine on the machines in the past which is why I presumed Q3 would work.

QuakeLive is free.

No need to be obnoxious about it your context is far from clear regarding quakelive and I was addressing that point not the query in the OP as to what would work on his hardware... chill.

I quoted the OP in which he talks about Quake Live so I thought it was pretty clear personally.
