Multiple Bsod over a few weeks - Now lost NVME (new drive)

Hi all,

I have been having Bsods over the last month or so maybe even more but infrequent.

Most have been hardware related according to the errors.. that I didnt write down..

Anyway I turned of XMP and removed CPU overclock about 2 weeks ago and it has been solid every since, not one crash.

Despite the GPU mining, all temps and voltages are ok. GPU not the issue as Bsod happened without miner on.

Today however I have had about 4 bsod back to back - now the latest bsod says cant access boot drive..

Boot drive NVME Sabrent Rocket 1TB is 8 months old.

Now when attempting to boot I get the black screen saying insert boot drive, it does not show up in the BIOS either. So I made a live Ubuntu stick from an ancient laptop I still have.

Im on the system now with that live Ubuntu, I can see the other 2 SSD in my system but can not access them (I assume becasue they are windows software raid) I dont need access its ok anyway.

However, I still can not see the NVME at all! I am no linux user though I just looked in the "disks" app as google told me.

Any ideas? Would a faulty Nvme caused of load of random bsods? Honestly I am looking at upgrading to a 12600k anyway but for now at least I would to figure out whats going on!

Hope you can help,
Sean

A faulty nvme can cause bsod and can therefore corrupt your OS. If the nvme drive is not being detected at all it is most likely dead. As it's 8 months old try rma.

Edit: i just saw your running 2 sata ssd's. have you made sure that your sata ssd's are in the correct ports. When your nvme drive is in it will disable 2 sata ports and your manual will tell you which ones. This could be your issue other than dead/damaged nvme.

I have not changed anything around though so it can't be that. I was running a m.2 before the Sabrent but it was not nvme, I plugged the rocket in first time and installed Windows no issue so can't see it being an issue.

I have bit the bullet and ordered a 12600kf/mobo/CPU cooler. My ram is basic dd4 so hoping it's up to the job I'll run some bench marks and see what's up.

I bought the Sabrent of the bay, I have messaged the seller but not holding out much hope.

Just looked they only have a 1 year warranty anyway! Other stuff has 5.

I'll get it setup on on my old SSD for now or even if magically shows I'll use the rocket. Old m.2 is 240gb so pretty painful once a couple of games are on it lol. Worst case I'll get another 1tb with a better warranty from a legit seller ( I say that he may help me out)

Thanks for your help

Your nvme is 8 months old. It's under warranty so you can rma it with the company. not sure if the have a eu office. Did you also check that the mobo supports ddr4 as some only support ddr5.

Also 8 months seems to be a failure with the Sabrant Rocket ssd. Here's why you should NOT buy a Sabrent Rocket SSD (ryadel.com)

Haha I googled it and found similar issues with them! No wonder they only have a 1 year warranty.

I'll fire Sabrent and email and see what they say but surely if the seller of the bay had it for 6 months or whatever it's not going to be covered. Worth a try though!

Yeah it's a gigabyte ddr4 board. Should be a decent upgrade assuming my basic ram does not hold it back too much. I really wanted dd5 but not at those prices.

Thanks again

So up and running on the new system with a 240gb 2.5" SSD, drive is dead. This Gigabyte board picks it up in Bios but reports 0GB size.

It shows up in Disk Managment under windows, it says something about it needing to initilized and gives MBR or GPT neither do anything and the drive shows as "unknown, not initizialed" rather than the usual showing of partitions etc..

I have a nvme coming from Ocuk now, 5 year warranty etc.. I did get it very cheap! It has crypto wallets and stuff on it, so not keen on RMA even if they would allow me, seeing as it was from ebay!

So technically I didnt need to upgrade but glad I did, I had been thinking about it since the new chips came out!

Thanks all.

shame it's dead but at least you got a new system and it's a very nice upgrade over previous system :)

So I was all up and running fine. I played around with Intel Extreme Tuning just to see 5ghz for the first time.

Kept getting bsod again lol. Memory Management and IRQL not less or equal are the ones that keep popping up. Even after resetting the BIOS I could not boot into windows, I would log on and then it reach desktop and Bsod every time.

So I reluctantly reinstalled windows 11 last night. All ok, temps all good etc...

Just installed Watch Dogs Legion as a test game as I know its pretty hard to run. Done a few bench marks all ok.

Decided to go into bios and up the multiplier by a few cant remember what I set but was well under 50. Rebooted, instant bsod loop again. Tried with and without XMP still stuck.

Again I went to reinstall from USB stick. This time I got a bsod during the install!!! IRQL not less or equal.

Another loop of bsod during install now puts me on some weird "user" login screen - I never even got to the point of setting a name or password so not sure what that is.

I am now running memtest as I suspect it could be the RAM? Very odd how the old NVME drive is dead as well though.

PSU is about 2.5 years old, same as the 2080ti. RAM is about 6.5 years when I first got the old system.

Really annoying to be honest, I had setup everything and installed things etc..

So everything is new bar the PSU, GPU and RAM. Oddly I tried the live Ubuntu before starting Memtest and I could not get 2 different mice to work, they would stutter and barely move, despite both working just fine.

I am on my work laptop now, thankfully its a brand new i5 so pretty decent for now.

Would anyone be able to suggest some decent DD4 RAM that would suit the 12600k and a Gigabyte UD motherboard well - at this point I think I may as well get some decent fast RAM as it actually seems to make a difference these days.

Seems to be very good for the money, others at that speed are much more expensive?

Just to add BIOS is updated to latest.

Thanks all.

Edit** on the third pass of memtest with zero errors. How odd.
Was working fine until I bumped the multiplier and enabled XMP. I'll will try installing windows again after another couple of paases. Think I'll re-do the usb stick for install as well

I couldnt be bothered to wait for more memtest, it passed two and half with no errors. Reinstalled windows 11 with default bios settings.

Started Bsod again (new errors this time) after every log in. Pulled one stick of RAM, same issue. Tried with the other 8gb stick and booted fine. Just ran a 10 min Cinebench all ok.

Fingers crossed! Tempted to enable XMP and try and an overclock to be sure though.. Thoughts?

Spoke too soon - was working ok so decided to install and run Firestrike Extreme - maxed out settings, ran for about 5 mins then bsod. Bsod on login after reboot as well then!

What a nightmare - surely two RAM sticks would not fail together and a NVME drive??

starting to question psu at this point. can you download hwinfo if you haven't already and monitor you 12v, 5v and 3.3v rails and see if either rails stay above 11.4v for the 12v, 4.7v for the 5v and 3.1v for the 3.3v while both at idle and while under load at stock?

I went ahead and ordered some new RAM - 3600mhz ballistix was pretty cheap from here about £68. Seemed to be the sweet spot for price/performance.

Put it in today - no crash or bsod at all!!! Thank god for that.

Played about 1 hour of Cyberpunk and exited the game without a crash. Launched and closed a few times all ok (it would have insta crashed on exit before).

To really make me certain I just put a 5.0ghz overclock on the P cores of the CPU and ran some cinebench and cyberpunk again. Still no bsod or crash.

I'm confident it was the RAM now.

Thanks for replying though! I wonder if the old RAM somehow corrupted the NVME to failure though? Seems unlikely and could just be a coincedance.
