What is the best way to manage multiple calendars these days?

I've got a personal calendar on Google and I have a work calendar on Exchange.

My phone is running 7.1 android, and my PC is running outlook 2016.

I access my personal calendar via the website and via my phone, but I also want to see it in outlook as well. I can easily do this by adding the iCal URL to outlook, but then outlook calendar invite preview emails don't show events other than the ones in your default calendar, so those personal events don't show meaning I have to manually look forward that date up.

To get around this I have been syncing the personal events into my work calendar with them categorised to a colour to make it obvious what they are and flag them as private. This is also good as my freebusy shows for personal events as well. The problem with this is that my phone now shows my personal events twice. I can't hide the personal calendar on my phone as then I can't create personal events on it.

It's like I want to stop a specific category from syncing to my phone.

Is there a better way?

I'm not sure. I keep work life and free life separate. If I have a doctor's appointment though where it means I need to leave work early, then yes I'll put that on the Outlook calendar.

So:

Doctor appointment during work - Outlook
Doctor appointment during holiday - Android
Pub lunch for a work colleague's birthday - Outlook
A curry night with old work colleagues - Android
Meetings at work - Outlook
Appraisals etc - Outlook
Clubbing - Android obv :-)
Family and friend birthdays - Android
Colleague birthdays - Outlook (as further up above)
Booked annual leave - Outlook
Stuff that I do during annual leave - Android
Bank holidays - Outlook
Stuff that I do during bank holidays - Android

And so on.

Personal calendar in iCloud, work calendar in Exchange. iPhone handles both on the same display just with different colours. Easy.
