I'm in the process of developing a Website, and it will offer its content in multiple languages. This is all well and good, until I start thinking about how to implement these other languages within a single domain name.
The site is a heavily modified Wordpress installation - for its security more than anything - which mainly relies on the core and, as such, plugins and 'Widgets' will not be used. Everything needs to be part of the theme and within the theme directory.
One solution I thought of is to use sub-domains for each additional language, which has its own Wordpress installation. But then I might end-up with 10 WP installations, databases and slight modifications to themes (for languages that are written from right-to-left, for example).
My other concern is from the perspective of SEO, as I'm not sure how sub-domains are handled by the different Search Engines. Everything else I think of is a lot more hassle, yet the sub-domain idea could make 'small theme changes' a major headache.
The site will initially launch in English (naturally), followed closely by Chinese, with wider language support planned after the site is well indexed, sizeable and popular (-ish, + hope).
I've also noticed some URLs which contain Chinese characters, and I'm still at a loss to how that is acheived and the advantages/disadvantages of it. If someone could shed some light on either or both of these issues, I'd be like this ->
, and God will love you (if you're that way inclined).
Merci muy much.
