I could do with a little help here, recently decided to upgrade my GPU (MSI ARMOR 8G RTX 2070) to something with a bit more of a kick in order to achieve higher refresh rates at 2K resolutions.

First I've ordered MSI RTX 2080 Super Gaming X Trio, card was buzzing like crazy under load. On top of that constant freezing, BSOD and in the end total system crash and re-install.

This was sent back to retailer but I was told there was nothing wrong with it, I've actually witnessed it running 4K benchmark myself ...

I thought that maybe it's time to look at other components in my PC. Back then I was running BeQuiet 650W Straight Power 11 PSU and MSI Z390 Gaming Pro AC mobo (this was whining a bit all the time). Got some good offers and replaced PSU with Corsair RMx850W and mobo with Asus Z390 TUF Gaming Pro.

All was fine with my current 2070 GPU, not a slightest buzz or whine.

Feeling lucky I've ordered MSI Ventus 2080 Super ... and here we go again buzzing was so loud that I could hear it from other room. Card went back but it was actually diagnosed as faulty.

I started thinking that it might be something with dirty power supply hence borrowed UPS from a friend.

Another GPU ordered MSI 2080Ti Gaming X Trio, running FPS's like a dream and whining like a pig as well as buzzing like a train size transformer ... sent back for refund.

I gave up with the idea of upgrading for a while, until I came across EVGA 2080 Super FTW3 Ultimate, card was looking simply amazing and performing almost like 2080Ti ... installed in my PC and ... surprise ... it is buzzing and whining like crazy, even with V-sync one and limited to 60 FPS (albeit quieter). This one is being returned today.

Now is it that I'm really unlucky or the whole 2080 range is just rubbish. Or is there something else at work that I can't pinpoint.

Nevertheless at this point I gave up on the idea of upgrading but would like to get to the bottom of this, as I'm starting to think that I maybe I'm expecting too much from such a power hungry GPU's.

Your input would be greatly appreciated.

Buzzing = coil whine. To do with the choke resonance. Happens randomly, but usually when they are not glued properly to reduce their resonance. Things that may help is changing the PSU as each individual PSU has a slightly different voltage/ripple and therefore may help to reduce or get rid of the coil whine. Alternative as you already have done is to get a different card.

I would say something else because loads of people have 2080x cards and no coil whine issues as bad as yours. I think its something else.

Where do you have your PC located and where is it plugged into. ie wall socket, extension, what else is plugged into the same socket.

I’ve got monitor and pc plugged to a wall socket via UPS right now but the effect is exactly same if plugged in directly without UPS

Your 1st card that you witnessed passing the 4k test in the shop that you said was buzzing and crashing, did it also buzz in the shop where it passed the 4k test

It definitely didn’t crash as for the buzzing it was hard to tell as this wasn’t quiet environment.

No issues with any other equipment.

Just ordered EVGA Supernova T2 PSU, will see if that is going to make any difference.

Just one of those things with powerful hardware. I had the exact same experience with high end cards. I’ve been through many and tried everything.

In the end I just put my pc in a corner cupboard built into the wall. Door shut, you cannot hear anything at all.

A lot can depend on choke design and card design. If they are quite well encapsulated in the heatsink/shroud then they tend to be less noticeable.

Around 60 frames and they are quiet. Much over that and it starts becoming noticeable. The super is 30-40% faster if not more so could be a reason why it’s more apparent than the 2070.

I haven't any whine from a GPU for a fair while. I'd hate it as PC on my desk at ear level. the WC keeps it so quiet that whine would be a right PITA lol

open back headphones too

I thought I’ll give you an update, I’ve managed to reduce the coil whine to bare minimum.

EVGA PSU didn’t do a thing to the issue, or actually made it much worse but...

I’m convinced that every single RTX 20.. card has some sort of a coil whine/buzzing sound inherited by design (be it audible or not)

I’ve managed to get mine down to a very much acceptable level after combining Nvidias own RTX 2080 Super Founder Edition with Seasonic Prime Ultra 1000W PSU.

This presents itself now as a very faint buzzing just barely audible over PC fans (Noctua 1200PWM running at 35%)

For now case is closed... that is until next upgrade
