Multiple wireless AP's, same SSID or different?

I currently have a D-Link DIR-615 (running DD-WRT) in the top floor of the house and a NetGear WNDR3700 (stock firmware) downstairs. I have the D-Link connected to the Netgear by cable.

When I first set them up, I used the same SSID for both the routers. However, I had issues with clients not roaming very well. Plus I have some clients that are permanently upstairs (such as my daughters 360).

I'm now planning to get a new router for downstairs and put the NetGear up stairs to replace the D-Link. Do you think it's worth going back to using the same SSID on both routers or keep the setup I have? The wireless devices I have connected are;

- iPhone (should roam)
- iPad 2 (should roam)
- iPad 3 (is used upstairs the majority of the time)
- XBox 360 (always upstairs)
- 3 x laptops (2 are usually downstairs but my daughters can vary)
