Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

There's a few videos floating about where a 'drone' has hit someone (Ive seen a few on Facebook). But there's lots on Youtube where people have been flying over people, close to buildings etc. These are the things that the powers above don't like.

I was out at a waterfall a couple of months ago and asked about flying for photos but an idiot hit a kid with one so they just banned them completely, Shame as there were some good photos to be had.

One I took yesterday morning,

these photos are all amazing, I need the mavic pro.
I wonder what its maximum altitude is. wonder if it can fly on like 5000m mountains.

I am a complete noob to this stuff but I think I read that it won't go higher than 500m from its initial altitude and it has a hard ceiling of 5000m.

if its hard ceiling of 5000m, that is perfect. I couldn't find it on the website.

I need to find 1k.

edit - nice one, now I know to look for ceiling rather than altitude found this.

A YouTube clip/first impression for those interested in the Mavic. The footage is soo stable, hard to fathom for the size of it. Shame they didn't know about the tap to focus :D

I've pulled the trigger and ordered one. As a biker it'll be a godsend just to throw in my rucksack and take with me. Especially on my trips with spectacular scenery, Alps etc. I've been 'quadcoptering' for a few years now with a Phantom 2 and Inspire 1. The Mavic is definitely the way forward, for me at least.

The inspire only makes sense now if you want to carry the X5 micro 4/3 camera (which I do). For the stock X3 camera there is really no point any more when you have the Phantom and Mavic with the same sensor and longer flight times.

I'll probably pick up a Mavic around xmas time I think. Spent too much money in the last couple of months (new house and car).

Think I might have to get me one of these later this year or early next year - looks seriously impressive!

Will be very interested to watch the full review that Flitetest carry out now they know about the whole "touch to focus" thing!

Yes. A lot of money if it gets away from you and you loose it

I will wait till hobbyking do a copy of it for £100

The chances of that happening are pretty slim from what I've read about it. Has a come home function and pretty sure if the battery runs low, it comes back to you as well.

Seems like a pretty fool proof drone for a beginner like me. I will get one at some point, will need to convince the missus though:p. Saying that my bday is coming up soon so maybe if I drop a few million hints...I'll get one:p.

Hobbyking will not be releasing a clone of the Mavic or any DJI, Yuneec, or 3DR product with anywhere near the same functionality for £100.
Try and build a multirotor including a Micro 4/3 camera for the same price as an Inspire Pro with the same functionality and you'll find you've probably spent double before it even turns a prop.

Looking for some advice from the people who have ordered the DJI Mavic. I plan on buying the “DJI Mavic fly more combo + DJI Care Refresh”.

I don’t have any real knowledge of good drone shops/suppliers. Are you going to buy direct from DJI or do you have a preferred supplier, and why?

I am currently considering Jessops or RC Geeks (that is where I bought my Hubsan 4 & Q4, I think the DJI Mavic should be quite the step up).

Guys can someone recommend me a cheap copter for around 30 quid that i could use to see if this is a hobby i could get into?

Something with a camera would be good and that can interface with an android phone.

Not for £30. You're looking at £100+ if you want a camera that can broadcast to a phone or some other FPV type device.
For £30 you'll get a small quad without a camera that will be fun to fly around. The Hubsan H107 series are great starter quads.
