Multiscreen issues with a 980ti

Merry Xmas all.

I have a multiscreen setup with a 2560x1600 monitor connected to a 980ti via DVI (old professional monitor) and a 4k TV for gaming connected via displayport.

For work I have the TV switched off and the monitor is on. When it's gaming time I switch the TV on and it becomes the main display. The monitor switches off. When I'm done I switch the TV off and it's back to monitor. Usually this happens seamlessly switching from 1600 to 4k and back. However occasionally the TV switches on but stays blank. The monitor is off too and I'm stuck in limbo with no viable display. Turning either tv or monitor on or off again doesn't bring either back. I'm then forced to do a hard computer reset.

Any ideas? Occasionally when the TV goes blank the nvidia display driver crashes and reboots and the TV turns on. Its particularly bad with games where the splash screen is at 1600p but the game itself is at 4k. It will fail between splash screen and game (eg Star citizen)! I never had this problem with my old 7970.

No solution here, but you can probably circumvent the "forced hard reset" by removing the display cables from your card and re-inserting them after a few seconds - the display driver fails to recover and should be kick-started by the cable being detected.

I've had similar issues on other PCs, with a plethora of cards. IMO a problem with dwm.exe is causing the display driver to crash, but repeatedly changing the main display is not exactly "best practice", so it's unlikely Microsoft will fix it anytime soon.
