Multitude of problems

Hi, my brothers laptop has suddenly had a nervous breakdown, the system itself seems to be ok but it is having issues, this is a list of what happens. Its not perfect as he told me this over the phone.

On start up windows manager ACENGSVR modules crash as well as the mm load drv.exe

The WMI provider host crashes.

With videos the media foundation protected pipeline.exe crashes.

All video players VLC, WMP etc all crash and files avi, mpeg, mp4 and wmv crash also.

Windows media player cant play audio files.

Windows cannot view images but they work with paint.

Games crash upon opening.

youtube and iplayer report flash crashing after 1 second of play.

The latest windows update wont install, also wont install the net framework update, he thinks it said error 346 but cannot be sure.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Scan for malware. It might be time for a clean install/repair.

Fdisk, format, reinstall, doo dah, doo dah...

sorry should have mentioned its vista and it came with windows installed so we have no disk and no malware or viruses have shown up, also system restore doesn't go back far enough to get rid of the problem. will try the Fdisk and see if that works.

Doesn't it have a recovery mode? Like press f10 or f11 at boot to restore from the hidden partition on the computer?

Grab a clean .ISO. Google is your friend.

Found Windows Vista Software Recovery using Hard Disk Partition
I have these options:

1)Recover windows to first partition only - deletes first partition allowing you to keep other partitions and create a new system partition as drive "C"
2)Recover windows to entire HD - deletes all partitions from the hard drive and creates a new system partition as drive "C"
3)Recover windows to entire HD with 2 partitions - deletes all partitions from the hard drive and creates 2 new partitions, "C" and "D"

Well how is it set up at the moment? Do you have drive C and D?
