Mum needs a new car

Thanks that's really helpful. What would I look out for with the tyres - signs of cracking?

Where did you see how long it's been for sale for and the V5C dates out of interest?
Yeah, I would check for cracks.

I saw the other info on Total Car Check through my login. You need to create an account on their site and all the additional information is for free. The comprehensive reports is what one has to pay for.

Going to see it tomorrow - link to dealer's website

Chap said they buy all their cars from lease companies, and they start them up and drive them every week or two so they're not just sitting around for months on end. He suggested the reason it's not sold previously is because of the colour and auto box not being very popular - whether there's any substance to that I'm not sure as I see plenty of red cars around!

I am wondering whether you are specifically after an SRi model, which appears to be higher spec and higher performance (148bhp)? Maybe lower spec and newer might be worth considering?

They're the only ones coming up when I search really - didn't select a trim level specifically. Max £9k, 60k miles, auto, 70 miles from either Stratford (where she lives) or Bloxham (where I live).

Is the 1L Focus engine really that bad?
Yes it is - its known as the "EcoBomb" for obvious reasons.

Ford will replace engines if (when) they go pop below 70k up to 16 plate (IIRC). My daughter had a Fiesta just over 70k where the engine didn't get completely destroyed and was rebuilt by a local guy for £600 or so. He said it was exceptionally rare to find one which could still physically move after the belt fails/loosens.

Avoid like the plague.

It might be worth widening your search if you are being that specific on location.
Not really that specific, we're looking up to about an hour and a half from either her or me, given I have limited time to take her to view cars and we need one pretty quickly. Even going 100 miles from me or her gives pretty much the same results and they're all bar one SRi's.

Very useful - thank you! :)

Anything else to be concerned about or to look out for if it's been sat for 8 months?
Not an expert really, but it would be the usual wear and tear components like suspension bushes, etc. That Astra has had a recent MOT in November and it passed with no advisories. Hence I don't think anything should crop up in the near future.

Check the condition of the brake discs for any severe corrosion. A little surface rust is OK though.

Take a look underneath the car to see how much corrosion there is, particularly on coil springs and suspension.

You could check the condition of the oil.

A trader should know not to let a car sit, so if they've been driving it it should be OK.

Went and checked the car out yesterday. They did a service on it before we got there - oil, filters, new front brake pads. Bit of a lip on all four discs and some surface rust but nothing major so expect they were the originals. Tyres looked pretty much new, loads of tread left and in good condition. Clean and dry under the bonnet too, no signs of fluids leaking before and after test drive.

Test drive was good, although being in West London with traffic everywhere we couldn't get above 40mph. Rear light bulb had gone which they somehow missed but they changed it for us on the spot, ending up buying it for £8,700 with 6 months warranty.

Mum drove it home from London to Stratford upon Avon up the M40, she said it was making an odd sound like heavy rain hitting paper from around 50mph and upwards. No vibrations through the car or wheel and she pulled over on the hard shoulder to check for anything obvious, but being dark and a motorway she carried on home and will get it checked by a local mechanic today.

Google Gemini suggests it could be a loose wheel arch cover, door/window seal, or water collected behind a panel somewhere so hopefully it'll be straightforward to fix.

tyre balancing maybe .. in the age of electrically assisted steering you get reduced feedback from wheels/tyres.

Ecoboom engines and their powershit gearboxes should be avoided.

With the exception of the ST models (the proper STs, not the "ST-line") as they use dry belts and switched to chains later on.
