Why is that the connections listed above seem far closer than say Father/Sons or Mothers/Daughters.

What I really mean is relationship wise, when the kids get girlfriends/boyfriends. There seems to be a certain amount of protection there from the parents, and they're subconsiously assessing their kids partners suitability. Or at least it seems that way.

With my Mum and GF for example, i'm always nervous when they meet, as my mum isn't quite herself and the same thing for my GF. I want them to get along and not feel like i'm having to spur the conversation along. I'm getting even more nervous as we're all having a weeks holiday together in May . Ah well I'll guess we'll see, I'll just have to get them both tiddly :)

As for the GF's dad, I feel there's a similar sort of relationship, although I don't think I'm quite as nervous around her Dad as she is around my Mum.

I met my boyfriend's parents for the first time last weekend. Paul and his mum went to chat in another room and left me with his dad. What a sweetheart! We had a lovely time!

When we left Paul told me his mum had told him I'm too good for him! My poor baby!

I do tend to get on with almost everyone though.

YOUR too good for him? :p

hehe she can't have a very high opinion of her son.
