Mundane pipe question

Dull question, but no more inane than most posts here

.

Where the hot / cold tubes of a washing machine meet the pipes there is a mechanical switch. Should the water flow if it's in the upright position, or should it flow if it's at 90 degrees, pointing to the right?

If I'm reading your question correctly then the 'on' position of the red/blue lever is definitely horizontal

Water will flow at 90 degrees, and won't when it's inline.

Only on OcUK can such a simple question become so complicated

My answer was assuming your pipes are horizontal too meaning that when the lever is inline with them the water should flow

If the handle is parallel to the pipe it's open. This serves as a good rule of thumb for most things in life.

Both of mine were broke when I recently changed my washing machine and I had to turn off by the mains.
However, my new washer only needs the cold one.
