Murcielago @ 219mph

This is OT slightly but I was thinking about it yesterday - the Veyron's reputed top speed is around 254mph, potentially.

Now the SSC Aero is in at 256.15mph.......

But in 1988 Callaway made a Corvette (road legal) called a Sledgehammer, that did 254.76mph, very flexible too (i.e. fine to cruise around in and relatively comfortable).....

......which had approximately 880BHP.

Now, what's the Veyron and the SSC doing with the extra 100, 200, 300BHP that they have on top of the Sledgehammer?

Do you think someone missed out on doing their aero package properly along the way? - as that's where a lot of the speed is to be had.

It's a bit random, so I apologise - but I thought it interesting.

That's very true, I'd forgotten that. Presumably that's down to the tyres and a few other safety factors, no doubt.

^^ heh, posted whilst I was writing :D

Still, I find the concept (and give a wry smile when I think about it) that a 16 valve, 5.7 litre pushrod operated V8 with two turbos managed to propel a street car to the similar speeds as a car with a huge, complex, 8 litre, 16 cylinder, quad turbo engine with 64 valves :D

even though it was a straight ish road the driver did not seem too clued up

How so? You ever done any 150mph+ driving? It's not easy. I did about 175 ish in a 996 on the Autobahn and it's extremely nerve racking and the slightest input on the steering wheel will see you changing lanes.

I say well driven, he did slow down after all on the second run due to one car up ahead.

Callaway, Hennessy, etc have many many cars that claim to do well over 250mph, but from what I have seen, it would take a brave man to do it. The best thing about the Veyron is that is can do that speed without even breaking a sweat.
