I've gotten into the business of making youtube videos, but the problem is the background music is always someone else's work that I've yoinked from somewhere else. I'd like to create my own tracks to match my videos more perfectly, but have no idea where to start looking. What I have in mind is something similar in function to video editing software, but specialised for audio, with some built-in library of sounds, the ability to import sounds, the ability to alter the pitch of each sound, and some moderately intuitive way of setting a consistent tempo and/or beat. Does such a thing exist, or am I pretty much asking for the moon on a stick?

I'm not looking for freeware, necessarily. Obviously, if it's free that's a point in its favour, but I'm willing to spend money to get something good.

What you are looking for is a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation).

If you want something similar to Video editing software you will be looking at Pro-Tools or Cubase.

You could use Pro-tools which will be perfect as this is both Video and Audio Editing software in 1 but this is a costly piece of kit and at an Expert level.

Fruity-Loops is meh... Budget software and I would avoid it if possible.

In order of software relevance for your purpose (Sound to video)

Pro-Tools
Cubase (PC Only)
Logic (Mac Only)
Reason
Fruity Loops
