Music files not playing

I recently transferred some music from one PC to a new build with Win 7 on.
The properties of the music are seem correct i.e. size, name etc. but when I try to play the music it starts in WMP, displays the album and track title and then after about 4-5 secs of no sound I get a strange sort of a click and the get asked if I want to play again.
I have tried different media players with no success and any advice would be welcome.
The guy who I did the work for is adamant that the music was playing OK on his previous PC and new music added to the new PC works fine.

I wonder if it's got anything to do with that blasted ownership nonsense. When I got W7, folders on my data drives were under ownership of the previous Windows, in this case XP. Couldn't access the folders until I changed the ownership. Not sure if that affects the playing of media files at all, if they are in folders owned by the previous Windows installation.
