hi guys

i was wondering if it is legal to distribute mp3 ringtones made from songs, all under 30 seconds and no profit made from distributing them

cos ive made loads from my song collection and wanted to upload them

any help much appreciated :)
 
No it's still illegal. You can't distribute music or video like that or upload it so others can download it.

It's like me ripping a film, and then removing all the rubbish from the beginning and end of it, and then distributing it over the net or p2p. I'm not going to make any profit from it, but it's still not allowed :)
 
I would imagine that music companies / artists make quite a lot of money from licensing ringtones , if less that 30 seconds escaped copyright then this wouln't explain the amount of court cases over sampling that there have been over the years
 
I'm sure you could use it yourself with no fallout (although I'm not aware of any specific "fair use" legislation in the UK).

Distibuting, on the other hand, would require permission fromt he copyright holder, no matter how small the excerpt (providing, of course, it is recognisable - if it weren't, however, it wouldn't be much use anyway ;))
 
also ringtones are now a verifiable income source for artists which mean that record labels are exploiting this channel. which again means they arent going to want people doing it for free.

Nope. Extracts, quotes, etc are legal for certain purposes, but it's restricted to things like academic usage, news reporting, etc, and even then, there are limits and conditions.
