Hi.
Is there any way to get an iPad2 to play mp3 files from a usb pendrive or external hard drive?

My parents want to replace their ancient laptop with one as they only use it for web browsing, e-mail and iplayer really. An iPad would allow them to use Facetime as well.

My dad had a stroke a few years ago and was left with Aphasia http://www.ukconnect.org/about-aphasia.aspx

The iPad would be perfect for him if he can use it to play the music he loves so much. Any solution would have to be quite simple for him.

Thanks for such quick replys, this forum is awesome.

Ill look into both suggestions but I was hoping there might be a plug in adaptor that a pendrive can connect to.

AbsenceJam are you talking about iTunes match? I could put that on my laptop and upload my dads music, is it then just a matter of turning on iTunes match on the iPad as long as it has a Wi-Fi connection?

That sounds like a perfect solution if so, even easier than plugging something in.

I'll go and look into that now :D

What i do is upload my music to Google Music and then there's an app for iPad (GMusic i think) that allows you to play your Google Music on the iPad.

GoMusic and GTunes both have Google Music support.

Both however seem to have problems with songs longer than 20 minutes.

Have you ever experienced this issue at all?

Yes that's right. It can also download + store tracks locally.

How much music does he have? iTunes gives you the option of syncing over lower quality (128kbps AAC) files or you can transcode yourself. Someone older will not hear a difference.

I think It's 30GB or so of music at 320kb I ripped from his CD's for him before he had the stroke. It would be one hell of an upload at 3Mbps on my connection but that's a one time thing.

Aphasia has left him with difficulty in understanding anything complicated so the more I can do the better.

How does this plan sound for the easy factor?

1. Get his music collection to my flat on a pendrive
2. Set him up an iTunes account and switch on iTunes match using my bank details
3. Huge upload :D
4. Buy him a iPad and set it up for him including iTunes match
5. Spend some time showing him how to use the music App
6. Relax knowing my dad can again enjoy the music he loves so much.

Can I restrict purchases from his iPad? I love the guy but I don't want him spending all my money on country and western music :D

There usually isn't much uploading involved, it's all in the name. It looks at the music you have and matches it to the music in the iTunes store, it only needs to upload what they don't have. Or as I said you can also just do things without iTunes Match/iCloud.

And yes you can set up restrictions and controls easily.

I know this sounds really silyl and I'm missing something; why don't you just put all the music in iTunes and then sync them to the iPad? No streaming involved?

Not silly at all :D.

The laptop they have now is ancient and failing. To get all his music on an iPad with room to spare I would have to get a 64GB one. He wants to start buying lots of music again so iTunes match takes ripping CD's and syncing out of the equation. My mum can phone me and say "Dad wants the new Willie Nelson album". I buy it and it's right there on his iPad in a few minutes.

We need a very very simple solution to this which doesn't have me driving round there every day to sync for him and barring me missing something this set-up looks perfect.
