hi guys, i'm pretty sure i know the answer to this but am i allowed to use a commercial track on a website?

i rememeber hearing summat about if its not the complete track, you're ok...

what is the fact of the matter?

i was about the say the same thing, but im not entirely sure. but then i started to think a bit more, surely if your not making an profit from it, and your not making it available for distro, then whats the harm? its free advertisement for the artist in question.

Record companies are greedy and inconsiderate - hence the RIAA being voted "The worst company" recently. They want you to pay for breathing near them, forget about listening to their tracks for free :(

how definitite is this guys, really can't be doing with the company getting sued... the 30 second thing would be great if its true...

The only way to get a definite answer would be to contact the appropriate government copyright body - whoever that is..?

A lot of sites give 30 second previews of songs though, but if you're doing it under a company name then you'd better make sure it's correct.

We went down this road a couple of years back. Wanted to use a small clip of a song from a well known band.

Contacted the record company and they said we'd have to pay something mad like £6000 for the rights to put it on the site.

Not surprisingly we went for some non-copyrighted music instead!

I'd talk to the government copyright body (like I say, whoever that is!). A record company isn't going to say you can use it for free, for example you're allowed to use clips from movies/TV for "parody" and they can't do anything about it... I just figure there might be something like that and I don't think that the record company will tell you it exists if it does.

That and I've heard many times that you can use a 30 second clip, but I've not had it properly confirmed so it might just be one of those "apparently... " rumours.

with copyright being such a hot issue I think it would be prudent to look for an alternative ... don't want anyone knocking at your door with a big bill for licencing
