Music server noob question

So, I already have a home server running FreeNAS for filesharing, syncing, backup, etc.

What I was hoping to do was have my music stored on it too, and be able to play music direct from the server to my hifi.

It seems clear to me that one option is to get a network audio streaming hifi component, which will simply stream the music from the server/NAS directly.

However, I was wondering if there's a way of playing music directly from the server to the hifi. Obviously, this would need a soundcard or some form of USB to SPDIF converter for the server on the hardware side. But on the software side, is there any software that supports this by allowing some form of "remote control"? I don't mean streaming the music from the server to a device, e.g. phone, and then transmitting the stream to the hifi. I mean using the phone (in the absence of any other remote?) to play music direct from the server to the hifi.

Hope that makes sense  I'm sure someone will say, why don't you just do option 1, but then that's not so much of a challenge...

There are probably loads of ways to do it and I'm unsure of the best way. However I do run Unraid with Plex and Airsonic, although I tend to either use Spotify or play music from the server directly via Foobar2000.

But in Airsonic's settings page there is an option to play music directly on the Server (I assume this is the same for Subsonic). And this can be changed for each player independently, i.e. DSub Android app can have different settings. I cannot see any similar settings for Plex Music.

I'll be honest I can't work out what the advantages are, unless I'm missing something.

This is what I feared... I may just try to find a decent budget network audio streamer...

Thanks anyway!:)

No worries. Tbh the only scenarios that sprang to mind were where you already have good quality audio equipment on the server (perhaps as an Unraid gaming box or something) or where the client/playing device has very little process power to stream the music. That said it looks like it's possible with Airsonic/Subsonic and you'd just need a way to select tracks via mobile, tablet or PC etc. If I remember correctly it was a very easy docker to install and setup.
