Music similar to Barber's Adagio for Strings?

A good place to start might be Philip Glass in that case. It's not exactly identical although he does have quite a distinct and unique way of composing. He's written some amazing pieces over the years and I'm sure you'd recognise a lot of it from films that he's worked on. Here's a couple you may or may not like though

Something else I noticed recently that you may find similar to Barber.

Do a search for Richard Wanger's Siegfried's Funeral March for Götterdämmerung. Its the same music from the film Excalibur. If Adagio for strings gets the hairs on the back of your next standing up, this music will have them actually pinging out of your neck and onto the carpet.

Ahhhh, that's what Starbuck plays when she goes back to her flat, on Battlestar Galactica! I thought it sounded a bit different to the OST music.

Also you should check out Ludovico Einaudi; more piano stuff but very heartfelt and melodic....Fuori Dal Mundo is a great piece of music; was in the sound track for This Is England.

Here's a heady mix:

Barber - Violin Concerto, Op. 14
Vaughan Williams - Five Variants of 'Dives and Lazarus'
Respighi - Ancient Airs and Dances - Suite III - III.Siciliana

You can't beat a bit of Vaughan Williams - check out his symphonies (no. 2 - A London Symphony is amazing, especially the 2nd part, lots of strings, very emotional)

Talking of Ennio Morricone....

If you like Barbers Adagio then this is a must listen....Tomaso Albinoni - Adagio in G Minor

How could I forget this one. This is the Choral Version of Agnus Dei sung to the theme of Barbers Adagio. It is performed by the Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge.
This is just as powerful (If not more so) than the original.
