Music that stops everything...

Has been my favourite track by far since the first time I heard it. Don't be put the fact it's Paul van Dyk, it's not at all like his normal stuff. 5:00 onwards gets me every single time without fail.

His older stuff is fantastic, as a dj and a producer he's drive by the US market which is a massive shame as its all now whack male vocals and softened down.

ANother classic -columbia...

Good shout.

Hmmm: songs that if they came on I would stop doing everything and just listen. Hard to think really.

Quite a few other Led Zep songs I guess:

Kashmir
Whole Lotta Love
Heartbreaker
Immigrant Song
Since I've Been Loving You
etc.

AC/DC: Back in Black
Rolling Stones: Brown Sugar; Paint it Black; Miss You; Gimme Shelter; Wild Horses
Black Sabbath: Paranoid
Bruce Springsteen: Born to Run; Thunder Road

There have been some good songs mentioned in here, but few that are truly worthy of the claim that the OP is making. For example, Back in Black is a good song but... really? It makes you stop everything you are doing?

The single most powerful section of a song I have heard is the middle / slow section (from 3.25) part of Paranoid Android. Both the underlying chord progression and the sound of the vocals are incredibly moving. Obviously, it's best heard in the context of the entire song.

As a whole though, How to Disappear Completely takes the title of most engaging song of all time. It is sad and downbeat almost to the point of being unbearable, but also beautiful and haunting at the same time. When the lyrics climax to sound like a ghost at the end to represent that the character has truly 'disappeared', it's impossible not to be moved.

Apotheosis - Austin Wintory

You don't need to have played the game to appreciate the beauty of this composition. I have literally zoned out on my bed for hours listening to the Journey soundtrack, but especially this one song.

Definitely agree, I'm not really into that sort of stuff any more (I'm torn between progressive-house and ambient), but Out There And Back is still an album I can go back and listen to occasionally and still really enjoy.

Caught me a bit off guard to be honest but i was just browsing my music collection creating a playlist for a gaming session. Anyway, Led Zeppelin's Stairway to heaven started playing and i just got a bit lost in it to be honest.....amazing stuff. Paused the game and listened to the whole song (headphones)
Doesn't really happen with the more modern chart music for me. Anyone have any similar experiences?
I'm not even a huge Led Zeppelin fan but thats the first time I've really listened to that song, and I mean REALLY listened to it :)

i am a huge zep fan they were even better live!
stairway is briliant but for me it isnt their best track

want to know how to play a les paul with a cello bow?

jpj and jimmy have still got it

bonham wasnt human! and jimmy makes that les paul sing like nobody else could (except hendrix)

Got to agree with the Pink Floyd ones in here and also John Frusciante. I've fell asleep out my face in my mates loft, in the dark, with Floyd and Frusciante int he background and it felt perfect at times. Could almost visualize the sounds he creates as things...epic.

Also listened to wish you were here on a 2am drive home from Glasgow with my mate whilst it was really snowy and the roads were dead. Was so peaceful and it felt like the song was made for it.

Wondering if I would list Ben Folds Five - Brick here
