Music - what determines its availability on Spotify?

I'm sure that Spotify and iTunes have a lot of overlap in their stream libraries, but is some of their music exclusive too?

On my phone lately, I've linked Shazam with Spotify so that my successful Shazams go into a Spotify playlist. It's really handy and neat, except that about 50% of my Shazams don't actually make it into Spotify. So I'm thinking: "what causes music to not be on Spotify?"

Successful Shazam-Spotifies include DJ Tiesto, Swedish House Mafia, 9 Lives, Savant, so mostly dance/house stuff, and also some olskool jungle like The Ganja Cru. Of course, Beauty and the Beast soundtrack got picked up ok too.

Some examples that Shazam picked up, but Spotify didn't pick up are:

Crush - Moe Shop
Hanjo Gaebler - Haeschen In Der Grube
Vintage Culture - Hollywood
Captain Jack - Dream a Dream (Spacefrog Mix)
Bassjackers and Jay Hardway - El Mariachi extended mix
DJ Fletch - Goosebumps
La Roux - In for the Kill (Skrillex remix)
Chaddwick - Two Minutes of Gratitude

Is it because most of these are remixes? I was most surprised that it didn't pick up the Skrillex one as Skrillex is like... everywhere! So I'm having to make a note of what Spotify misses in case they appear in the future.

Cheers, and happy Friday everyone :)

Usually either artists, Taylor Swift's music only came back to Spotify 5 or 6 weeks ago as she was exclusive to Tidal for a while as they paid artists more for example, or the record company not having come to an agreement with Spotify themselves.

Spotify actually has a pretty decent amount of remixes probably even 70% of the more obscure stuff mostly where they don't its due to lack of licensing from the artist or their label/rep.

In a word: money

Artists, tracks and albums will come and go due to licensing and exclusivity deals. A bit like shows on Netflix disappearing, it depends on the deals which the record labels sign and sometimes the deals which they don't.

If something disappears from my playlist(s), will it just be greyed out or does it drop off completely? A bit concerning if it completely goes, so I might have to make a note of what's on my playlists. Especially my Shazams list.

Related query - have you ever looked up a song, played it, but what you end up hearing is something completely different? E.g. looking up a techno track, but you end up hearing a country & western track lol

But you can set it in the preferences, I think, to not hide unavailable tracks from your playlists. They'll still be there though, and will reappear if they later become available again.
