Musical element in Thunder Child (war of worlds)

Hi musical peeps..

at 2:29 in this track (and a few other places)is a very recognisable musical element:

It sounds almost verbatim from another track, and i cannot for the life of me name it. I can hum it and I know it, but cannot get the name!! Its a very famous track too, i know it!

Can you help?

Clapton recorded it in 1970, Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds is from 1978, so more likely the other way round!
