Hi, can anyone help me with this one? I was advised to check msconfig Startup to ensure there were no unauthorised programms running in the background.

These are shown in the STARTUP within msconfig and I wonder is it safe to "Un-Tick" the box so they do not start on startup? (Windows XP)

RTHDCPL.EXE

CLIStart.exe

jusched.exe

ctfmon.exe

Rundll32 P17

DrvMon.exe

ctfmon.exe

There are a few others in there which I'm content with CFD (cable modem), Print Screen and explorer view but I'm wondering is it really necessary to have all the above enabled?

Thanx

RTHDCPL.EXE - This is associated with Realtek Audio
CLIStart.exe - This starts the tray icon for Catalyst Control Center. I think you can disable it without losing any other functionality than the icon.
jusched.exe - This is the Java Update scheduler. There is no need to have it running all the time.
ctfmon.exe - This is associalted with the Office Language Bar
Rundll32 P17 - This is apparently associated with the sound drivers
DrvMon.exe - "drvmon.exe is a process associated with the Alcor Micro Drive Monitor software." I don't know if you can disable this

I hope this helps.

ctfmon.exe - This is associalted with the Office Language Bar [You can disable it but certain programs like MSN Messenger will restart it]

Rundll32 P17 - This is apparently associated with the sound drivers [I'm confused why this is present - are you using both onboard and an additional soundcard? - its a helper function so shouldn't be a problem disabling it in 99% of cases]

DrvMon.exe - "drvmon.exe is a process associated with the Alcor Micro Drive Monitor software." I don't know if you can disable this [Should be able to disable it fine - potential for loss of specific non-essential functionality]

I hope this helps.

Advanced text services, not actually office as it will be loaded on a machine that office is not even installed on as the language bar is part of the OS.

Control Panel > Regional & Language options > Languages Tab > Details > Advanced > Check 'Turn off advanced text services'

To remove it :)

Yes I have onboard sound (via ASUS P5K SE/EPU), but when I ordered the system I (unwisely) asked for a separate sound card to be installed. When I received the computer the earphone jack to the front to the case (NZXT Silent) wouldn’t play, so I contacted the system builders and they advised that NOT all sound cards supported the front end jack Quote: “Also the speakers issue, some of the creative cards do not support the front audio jacks. If you switch the default sound device to Realtek in the sound options you should get the CD player and DVD etc through the front”. Unquote.

I’ve actually stored my Altec Lansing speakers away and as such I only use ear phones which I plug directly into the Creative sound card at the back of the computer.

In the system tray I have both the Realtek and volume control icons. The volume control seems to have fewer options but it does show it as being associated with the Sound Blaster Audigy sound card.

I might be better plugging the phones into the onboard (Rear) socket and disabling Rundll32 P17 which is associated only with the Creative Card. Any views on that one?

You can disable most things in msconfig startup, the items in here are added after applications are installed.
