Mutliplier constantly changing?

My setup is as follows;

E6300
Gigabyte DS4
2gb PC5300 Mushkin DDR2
7800GTX

I'm having trouble with any kind of overclock - even 300fsb causes the computer to reset before getting past the BIOS So it's all back to stock settings now and i've noticed the mutliplier in CPU-Z changes between 6-7. Is this a power feature of the board or something?

It's just speed step (aka EIST) kicking in to save power. You can turn it off the BIOS if you want to.

Ah cheers I did turn it off originally, but the motherboard put the original bios back on, so settings must have reset.
