MW2 Screen Freeze

Hello!

I am experiencing lock ups in Modern Warfare 2.
Basically the screen would freeze and the only way to get out is to reset the computer from the front of the case.

Does a screen freeze point to overheating GPU or overheating CPU?

I.e. what should I be looking at in my rig?

FYI I am running Crossfire 5770s.
Q6600 at 3.5Ghz (443X8) and PC8500 ram.

Thoughts? Thank you :)

Ive been having random freezes with mw2 as well, if i hit ctrl alt del and bring up task manager i can get it running again, had this with the system clocked at 4ghz and at stock, i run my graphics card at stock speed, ive tested the card with furmark and 3dmark 06 and can definitely rule it out.

Same! Ive actually downclocked my CPU from 3.5 now down to 3.4 (at 425 as opposed to 443 fsb).

I think it happens when you are the host. It only seems to happen to me when I'm the only one with 4 bar pings.

When it freezes it hard locks and only a hard reset will fix it. Interestingly enough the round will still be being played in the background and if you wait to the end of the round it will sort itself and you will go back to the lobby with everybody else.

Its a strange one, I've never known that before.

Is everyone on the Cat 9.11's by any chance? I think the driver may be stalling on the new 5*** of cards in this game.

Wow didnt know that theforce and kitch9!
So kitch you waited till the end of the round?

A funny thing is, Caps lock still turns on and off, which usually indicates the system is not truly frozen.

Yup, the system is completely unresponsive, I cannot alt, tab, del out and they only way out is to hard reset.

It happens every 3 hours of play or so. Last night when it froze I got up to make a cup of tea instead of resetting just to see if it would correct itself. I came back and the round had ended and I was back in the lobby with everybody I was just playing with. Apparently I was just stood still to them for the last 2-3 minutes of the round, but I was still in the game.

I don't think its anybodies overclock settings as it happened with my rig at stock. I really think its the drivers stalling under 3d and when the program changes back to 2d it corrects itself.

I've been given a tip regarding this issue to try disabling Steam in-game community whilst playing. Here's how to do this.

You may completely disable Game Overlay by going to Steam’s File >: Settings menu and selecting the In-Game tab. Then uncheck the Enable Steam Community In-Game checkbox.

From Steams website.

Ooh! Good find and in fact I WAS THINKING EXACTLY THE SAME THING!
I.e. everytime the steam pop ups would come up, the screen would freeze just a little or hang just a little.

Might have to give this bad boy a try. But a shame to disable this feature as its quite nifty!

I have been reading on other forums that people have been experiencing lock ups through no apparent reason. Even on standard clocks etc.

mine was freezing up but I could still hear the sound, i turned the textures down from highest and now its completley stable, 8800GT here.

Had the exact same experience although it seems to be better now than it was, seems to happen to me after a few hours of gaming. Doesnt really seem to be a heat issue either so far as I can tell :/
