Hi guys, my client is using Go Daddy, they seem to have a wierd way of setting up MX records and stuff.

My internal domain is "mydomain.net", as is, my external domain.

In go daddy, I've set an A record for mail.mydomain.com to point to my IP, then in MX, I've created a record to point to mail.mydomain.com.

Is that all I need to do?
 
The A record should resolve to your web server IP, the MX record should resolve to your incoming mail server.

no OP is right for every host you need an A record, its nothing to do with whether the host is a web server, mail server or any other server type.

Op, as for MX records sounds like you have the right idea. Have you tried doing some lookups from externally? either using nslookup on a machine on another network or a web util like kloth.net

http://www.mxtoolbox.com/ is also a good place to check everything is working ok from an external perspective.

The only other thing to check is that your IP is actually on a mail server :)
 
That's right, MX -> A Record -> IP address.

Normal setup:

@ MX 10 mail.domain.com.
@ A 192.168.1.1
www A 192.168.1.1
mail A 192.168.1.2

Mail points to the A record that directs to the IP address 192.168.1.2
 
We don't have a web server, that's hosted with go daddy at their IP.

So, assuming the ip address of my exchange server is 212.212.113.113:

I've done an A record of:

Host = mail
Points to = 212.212.113.113

then an MX record of:

Host = mail
Points to = mail.myserver.com

Sound right?
