If you don't care about size and only want to play games occasionally why not just get a Dell Studio 15?

Intel® Core™ i5-430M (2.26Ghz, 4Threads, turbo boost up to 2.53 GHz, 3MB cache)
Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64bit, English
4096MB 1333MHz Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM [2x2048]
500GB (5400RPM) Serial ATA Hard Drive
512MB ATI Mobility RADEON HD 4570 Graphics Card
DVD +/- RW Drive (read/write CD & DVD) with DVD Burn software
Primary 6-cell 56 WHr Lithium Ion battery
15.6" High Definition (1920x1200) WLED
Dell Wireless 1397 Mini Card (802.11 b/g)
2.0 Mega pixel Integrated Web Camera

£699 - any vouchers + Quidco

Whereas basically the same spec Alienware m15x (i5 540m vs. i5 430m and gt240 vs 4570) comes to £1238.

The GFX card will be weak though.

The gfx of Mx11 is weak too, as is the CPU. If you are looking at the Mx15 it shows you don't __NEED__ it to be 11''.

You have plenty of choice to get a 15'' with a mid-range GPU paired with an i3 or i5.

Both the Mx11 and Mx15 are overpriced if you don't plan to game often.

The GFX card will be weak though.

It's only just over half the price and only really has one small caveat, if you compare similarly priced ones:

Sony VAIO F11 S1E/B / Core i7 720QM 1.6 - 2.8GHz / 6GB / 500GB / GT330m / Blu-ray BD-ROM Combo / 16.4" / Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit

You get i7 over i5, faster GPU, Blu-Ray, an extra 2GB RAM and it costs £120 less (£1119 vs £1238).

That's a Core i3 I think, with the i7, 500GB HDD, 4GB RAM and upgraded screen it comes to £1258.

With the exact same specs as the Sony (albeit slightly slower graphics) it comes to £1528.99.

Hey there guy just been offered m15 with a i7 720QM 250 HD 4 gb ram and 240 nvidea all for 850 what ya reckon and also what kinda benchmarks am I looking at also can you upgrade the graphics card to the 260 or if there a better one out now

If you're looking at the M15x, take a gander at the Kobalt G860.
Available with the 5870m which is better than the GTX260m by a small country mile.
(The GTX260m is about 25% behind the GTX285m, and the GTX285m is anywhere from 10% faster than the 5870m, but the 5870m is more often 10-30% faster).

Edit: never noticed you'd been offered it for 850, that's not a bad deal, make sure you stick on the latest BIOS though, because the M15x has some issues, sound and throttling which the later BIOS help with, the M15x shouldnt be coming with a Nvidia 240 card either, as it has only been offered with the 260 IIRC)

I'd recommend the studio 15. Its blisteringly quick and if you don't aim to game its good. Also if you're encoding you might appreciate the quad core which I have to say is amazing on a laptop; it redefines the definition of portable powerhouse. Try get it on a good deal like I did too and you'll be smiling all the way :). Many who haven't got the Dell Studio 15 got the HP's which, aside from a slightly flimsy feel, are ok. They're around or slightly more than the Studios in general.

Contrary to the OP, I intend to get MX11 half for work (MS Word, Excel & surfing the next) and half for gaming.

I am fond of this one because of the following reasons:

1) The size, it's the only gaming laptop which is as small as 11.25". Despite I can consider Panasonic latest 10" CF-R9 which even is equipped with Core i7-620UM. However it is not designed with a separated graphics card which means I can play many 3D games on it.

2) It is light for as far as a laptop capable of gaming is concerned. The CF-R9 is perhaps the lightest even with its battery on for 7.5 hours of operations yet it is not a game laptop.

3) The battery of the MX11 lasts for 6 hours under non-game mode which is not bad. Basically, if I'm going to spend my day in a cafe, I can go without carrying the charger with me unless I want playing games in that entire 6 hours.

I have researched quite many other brands and models for the last couple of days, and generally a laptop up to 15" or beyond is really for home based operations. You don't want to carry a 15" laptop for 15 minutes specially in Summer. But the reality at this point is that most gaming laptop with either i-3 or i-5 are at least 14" big.

But all that is for folks like myself who fancy smaller sizes. MX11 strikes a balance between performance and battery life between gaming and non-gaming modes. I am particularly fond of the switching between these 2 modes of operations. MX15 is too heavy and too big for me.

Having said that, I wish MX11 can support the following games which I play:
a) Battlefield 2 Bad Company, Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142
b) Anno 1401
c) The Sims 3
d) Company of Heroes Tales of Valor
e) Tom Clancy's End War
f) East India Company
g) Grand Theft Auto IV
h) Crysis Warhead
i) Dawn of War
j) Civilization IV and V
k) All the adventure games I've got

And I wish it will be supporting Mass Effect 2 and the forth coming Mafia 2!;)

I like your justification... :)
