My 11 yo son

All

I can not thankyou all enough for all the advice.

Aod on the Alphasmart yes this is the usual approach but and we are really moving to a new topic I think the skills learnt from Office are far more useful.........I know for sure I very rarely write anymore.

Maybe I should clarify my concerns slightly more........in school I am sure I can restrict his access to the internet. What I really want to do is restrict his in school access to only MS Office, full stop......no games, tools, browsers. If not he will just play and the school will not allow it to remain.

Surely if he knows this, then he won't do it?
If you play games, they will take it away, don't play game son.
Give him some responsibility of his own, good lifeskill too.

Some jealous kid will probably break it anyway so I wouldn't worry too much as I can't see him having it for very long, not at 11 yrs old.

I know my high school got very up tight about this. They wouldnt allow any personal computers on there network. But that was way back in 2005 :P.

Id also agree and check with the school, they sometimes can provide a laptop or can advise you on it.

Hikari - I like your approach but it is almost certain to mean I would get a new netbook.

Simi - I share your fear but we have spoken to school and this is not as unusual as you would think, I think if he uses it as it meant to be used it will be ok........again why its important to have its usages reduced.
