my 17" CRT caught on fire last week but i didn't really care as i was going to austria on holiday. i'm now back and using my old old old old 14" CRT and 800x600 doesn't really cut it for me :-p

i've been thinking of upgrading my monitor for a long time now and finally i really do need a new one.

only problem i have is that my computer isn't top spec anymore and was just wondering if an old Ati 9600XT would be able to power the dell 2407 ??

i don't really play counter-strike or BF2 anymore but i would love to play C&C3 when its released.

any ideas if its worth buying a dell 2407 or do i need really just need a whole new computer?

I've had CRTs do the same, always a suprise!

Your 9600XT should power a 2407 around the OS adequately, but you'll struggle with games. The requirements for the C&C3 demo are:

· OS: Windows XP, Windows Vista (32-bit; 64-bit versions of
Vista are not supported)
· CPU: 2.0 GHz or higher
· RAM: 512 MB or more
· Hard Drive: 1.4 GB or more of free space
· Video: DirectX 9.0c compatible video card. Video card with 64
MB or more memory and one of these chipsets is required: ATI
8500 or greater, NVIDIA GeForce4 or greater. (ATI Radeon 9200
and 9250 PCI, NVIDIA Geforce 4 MX cards not supported.)
· Sound: DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card

Which makes it seem like your card will be ok (I don't know about the rest of your system), although i wouldn't put much faith in minimum required specs.

You will have to get a pretty expensive rig to play well on a 24". I'd go for sometime a bit smaller... but I'm a stingebag :p

Yeah, just incase I wasn't clear, I'm not talking about native resolution when I say "Which makes it seem like your card will be ok", we're talking minimum settings and lucky if it's playable.

yeah i got the demo and love it, i'm fine for minimum spec of the demo.

it'd be the only game i play when it comes out and i don't really wunna upgrade to a PCI-E motherboard where i'd have to buy new RAM, CPU, GFX as well.

i'd be happy if my current 9600XT could run my desktop smoothly and i could always just have the game run at a 1:1 ratio at like 1280*1024 like it does atm with settings all on medium.

then when i get my student loan i could upgrade my rig in september. (by upgrade i mean get a new everything lol)

thanks for advice guys.

wow - 24" of awesomeness!!!

got the monitor just 20 mins ago and it is HUGE!!!

rather bright though so will have to turn the brightness down before i get a headache.
