My 1920x is confusing the heck out of me *newb first post*

First post - so please be gentle.

I'm currently using an AMD Threadripper 1920x. I've run it through numerous benchmarks like CPU-Z, Passmark, Geekbench 5...but I'm seeing something really weird. So Its running on the Asus Prime X399 EATX motherboard and it's normally clocked at 3.6ghz, but I have an overclock on it at 4.125ghz. Its completely stable and I don't have any liquid cooling etc...just a Noctura CPU fan on it.

CPU-Z:
Single Threaded performance is 456.3 (this is expected with the overlock - 1950x is 406 as a reference).
Typical single thread on this device is about 368-380 I think.

However, Multi-threaded performance is clocking in at 3787.8 on a 12 thread test. Now this chip says it has 12 cores and therefore 24 threads, but CPU-Z only allows me to choose 12 thread test on version 17.01.64. I've seen that other people on the CPU-Z website with the same processor are typically seeing 6400+ (8696 for the 1950x for reference).

Then - i looked into task manager to make sure everything was being utilised fully and in "Performance" tab, under CPU it says "AMD RYZEN Threadripper 1920x 12-Core processor"...but then down in the details it says:

Base Speed: 4.17ghz
Sockets: 1
Cores: 6
Logoical Processors: 12
Virtualization: Enabled

So which is it? A 12 Core processor with 24 threads or a 6 core processor with 12 threads? And why is my processor coming out 40% less than other people on CPU-Z...

Geekbench shows the same problem by the way - about 40% down on multithreaded performance.

I think because of the age of the motherboard, it's already on the latest bios sadly. Its more likely to be the CPU-Z version maybe....but then again...check this out..

the 1920x on geekbench should be 974 single core and 8771 multi according to their samples, but I've just done a test now and mine, is 1074 (exected because I'm a little oc'ed) but multithreaded is 6173!??!

Its so weird. And geekbench is also saying 6 cores and 12 threads?

Just looking on 3D mark too...at people round the 4GHZ mark...they are getting a CPU score of 11000....I get 6299 and in the bottom 1% of 1920x threadrippers?!?!

I doubt it is the board, I have both the x399 PRIME (Bought because it worked with ESXI in the early days and the taichi didn't) and also The Taichi which is the board im currently running. Let me grab some benchmarks on my threadripper rig (currently running 2133 memory clocks). Can you see all the threads in task manager?

I recon you might have a ccx disabled. In ryzen master are you running gaming mode or something?

Riiiiiight.....after rummaging about - it turned out to be Ryzen master set to game mode...disabled 6 cores. Jeez....right - so CPUZ is now reporting 7889 which seems more like it. Hmm....that app needs a popup warning you of this weirdness. There are options to Disable zero cores or 4 cores, neight were set as ticked...because off screen somewhere 6 cores were disabled. Utter madness.

There we go. You got me overclocking my chip now and I never bother. :D Just upped the memory speeds some and threw more voltage at it. Barely seems worth it I gained 1.4 points single thread.

I could overclock the chip a bit but last time I bothered I ended up messing around for hours and all I managed to do was make it run all core 400mhz because things got too toasty!
 
Cpu-z says 24 threads, 468 on single thread and 7885 on multi..which sounds more like @ real number compared to your 1950x

I turned the overclock down 100mhz as it crash in Geekbench 5...I'll test again shortly as I'm just running 3DMark at the mo.

Don't even remember switching on Gaming Mode
 
Time Spy Extreme just clocked 8752 - my best result - and now I know why hahaha.

Yeah superb. I'd been scratching my head for hours last night and today...but...finally some proper help. This is the first computer I've even bothered looking at for overclocking. Not gonna do anything fancy, just want best bang for buck out of what I've got.
 
All I've done in the bios at the moment is turn on XMP, then in Windows ran AI suite and then afterburner....but at some point in the past, clearly I've run Ryzen Master too. I'm definitely a novice. Running on air.

The 1st gen TR chips are still plenty powerful enough for everything so it should last for a while yet :) for memory overclocking you want to be putting load line on VDDCR_SOC and its also smart to add some more voltage to the soc as well, when im shooting for 3200 across 8 dimms its basically maximum load line on the cpu and soc as well as the soc up at 1.1v etc and things start getting pretty toasty under my AIO.
 
Ya see ..ya lost me instantly lol. :) I've got 48gb of ram on XMP 1600mhz. I presume thats a serious bottleneck?

Not really, 1600mhz seems slow though unless you are really at 3200mhz and haven't doubled the data rate. If it reads 1600mhz in cpuz that is really 3200mhz as its DDR (double data rate). If you have got to that using all 8 sticks then you are doing pretty well. Depending of course on CAS latencies etc.
 
Ah yeah I see, it's in XMP-3200 mode with quad channel. But there's 2 X 16gb and 2x 8gb Simms. But same brand and rating. Profile says it's is 16-18-18-36

Half populated its easy to hit 3200 :) fully populated... yea it's a pain.
