My £2,000 upgrade.

Hey guys I'm upgrading my pc with a max of £2000. Last time I upgraded was when the 7800GTX was the card to have, so maybe a year ago was my last full upgrade.

My current spec:

PC Case: Lain - Li
Power Supply: Noisetaker 600W
Processor: Dual Core 4800+ @ 2.7Ghz
Memory: Corsair 2GB DDR XMS3200C2PT TwinX
Motherboard: DFI Lan Party SLI
Graphics: GeForce 7900 GTX 512MB
Harddrive: WD Raptor 74 GB 10,000rpm
Monitor: BenQ FP241W 24
Resolution: 1920x1200

My current OcUK Basket:

Total : £2,073.75

I'm sorted with the Motherboard, Graphics, CPU. I'm not to sure on the Memory and the PSU.

So what is your suggestion when it comes to the PSU + Mem? I will be overclocking this baby, also maybe add Windows Vista to the basket? Plus is there anything around the corner which would stop you ordering right now? As I can wait a few weeks if needed. Are there any none bugs with this mobo which mite need a bios update?

That would be a sweet build, I wouldnt know much about the BFG psu's though never seen much about them ( tbh ive not looked ). And from what i gather that memory is great. But some have there says on it.

But i want your credit card lol ! :p
 
Cheers for the reply. I picked the PSU because its approved for SLI and I've picked two BFG cards so I thought it would be a good match.

LOL I've just cancelled my order for a £2000 Laptop and thought id upgrade my computer as I enjoy gaming...what 19 yo dont lol.
 
If just for gaming, the Quadro is overkill TBH. Go for the X6800* instead :)

He'll have Quad core and if he's gaming, more games will be taking advantage of multi cores.

Edit: Wouldn't the BFG psu be a better choice, He'd probably never have to upgrade it again for quite some time.
 
OK i've changed the ram so thats now sorted, still not sure about the PSU tho, I will be overclocking so id like to have a 1000w+ PSU.

update: iv gone for this psu

Very similar PC to what I got, expcet I have better ram and only a E6600 cpu but I have Oc'd it very high up. The Galaxy PSu is very good but it isn't 8800gtx sli certified but it will have no problems with it. It's a Tier1/2 psu. To put that in to context most psu's in the UK are tier 3/4/5. It is one of the few tier one psu's in this country. The SIlverstone O1000 is coming and is even better but I couldn't wait for it so went for the Galaxy.

The ram I like is the Corsair Dominator series and I went for the PC2-8888 ie 1111mhz at 4-4-4-12, and it's stable upto 1300mhz with rated timings.

I wanted the QX6700 but ran out of money so can do without since and overclocked E6600 is just as good right now in nearly all games and future games.

The BFG 8800gtx sli si a very good choice and is what I went for. Mine came in clean and great shape and OCuk are doing them for an amazing price.

I do want to know what cooling you will be using,case and display. As the 8800gtx sli and Galaxy psu are huge and need a very large case. The QX6700 runs extremely hot and can't be oveclocked without serious cooling. A Big Typhoon, Zalman, Scythe , Tuniq Tower or H20 is highly recommended.

Also having a 8800gtx sli in your system will be held back severley if you game at low resolution. I hope you have a 1920x1200 screen at the very least, or you are not going to see any visible improvements with the sli, as the single will be xteremely fast and to the point where you will be forced to use v-sync to stop visual tearing.

EDIT: sorry i didn't read what you had , yes the display is fine and you will be quite happily gaming at 1920x1200 max settings with 8-16ssAA. What lian Li case is that? It's not a midi is it? A full tower is what you really want. Myself I have a Dell 3007 and am amazed at how the two cards cut through that resolution like nothing I have seen before.

Feel free to PM me, if you want extra help and advice when you get the system as I am quite knowledeable about it now and have a 3.6ghz E6600, 1200mhz ram at 4-4-4-12 timings and all very stable.

lol can't afford that, im a lazy 6th former, i only got 90 quid, im hopefully gonna do a cheap 939 upgrade off of that beloved auction site this weekend.

I had a look at your case and you are right you won't have any clearance issues.

Strange that PM doesn't work. maybe it's because I need to post more. I don't have MSN, but if you goto Guru3d.com forum I am there as TonyM16. Or I could try getting my post count up to 50 so that peopl can PM me.lol.
