Went to fire up my 360 last night, but the drive started maknig a horrible scratching noise.. Fortunately the disc wasn't scratched. But the drive is shot..

I called Microsoft up and told them I had the RROD problem. So its gone in for a warranty repair.. I'm hoping they'll switch out the board and then upon testing, realise that the drive is shot and replace that too.

It's out of warranty so I have nothing to lose.

I think this is my 5th 360.. But the crazy thing is, it has been drive problems every time.. Everyone harps on about the RROD, but their drives are obviously very poorly made also.. Unless i've been very unlucky..

My 360's have come out the box, been placed in a well ventilated location, and not touched EVER ! apart from loading and unloading a disc.

The other drives failed very early on in their lives.. This last one though made it for a good 18months.. and this is with it hardly being used. (I mainly use my 360 for Xbox Live games)

My second premium was rubbish, it scratched my discs and made horrible noises when the disc stopped spinning or when I ejected it.

I had a 3 year guarantee with the store I bought it from and when I was going to replace it they never had any premiums so they offered me an Elite for free.

It's still not as quiet as I would want it to be, but it's not as high pitched and it doesn't make weird noises or scratch the discs anymore.

I hope you get one that works :(

The scratching drive noise can be easily fixed. It's just a case of the magnet in the drive that holds the DVD in place has come loose. A simple bit of super glue fixed it for me.
