I have had a Core since about launch, admittedly I have not played it much which is why it's probably lasted this long.

Basically, the screen has started turning funny colours during Forza it's kinda like a yellow tinted interference, I am now trying to switch the console on and it is doing green swirl and I get a mode not supported message on my TV and nothing appearing, after a minute of being off it will boot up but then I go back to the eventual funny colour/display problem in Forza and it won't boot again.

Is this a common symptom of 360 death? or do I need to torture it a bit more by playing Forza some more? has it got to be in red ring of death state to be covered by the replacement scheme?

If its outside of warranty, then it is only covered by the 3 year extended warranty on the Red Ring of Death failure. All other failures and your not covered afaik.
