My 3770k build... comments? Quiet?

Forgot to say I've already got:

EVGA GeForce GTX 680 SC Signature 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
Windows 8
SSD / HDD's etc

Purpose of performance is gaming mainly, but when I work (home office) I'd like it relatively quiet, would like to overclock it for games, but not massively. Possibly will add another GTX680 at some future date if I think I need to when I move to 2d surround monitors.

could use a pre noise dampened case, a fan less psu, and liquid cooler on your cpu, and get noise levels down to next to nothing tbh

but then again you would also have to do something with your video card as well, as i bet thats the noise part then

everyone here will also say a i7 is a waste for gaming so go i5 and keep them all happy, for me it's also about what else you do that may use it, or the some games that will, and future ones etc, but it makes no more noises, or makes any more heat, might use more power than a i5, but can turn it down when not gaming, as you have a sdd so will boot into bios and can change OC profile in less than 30 sec max, so no big deal there either

You could also invest in a fan controller. I know the BitFenix Recon will allow you to drop all case fans down to 400rpm for silent operation. If you need one that is.

Total : £718.43 (includes shipping : £13.75).

i5K will be better bang for buck, you can overclock it quite easily for even better performance. You don't need RAM over 1600mhz on the 1155 socket. I've used 16GB as it's a fair price and makes for a better all round rig (8GB is ample really for gaming). The viper RAM kits overclock well, ignore the 1600mhz sticker, they are good for over 2000mhz should you ever need to ask them for it.

Mobo is a bit more money but is well spec'd with bonus goodies, nothing really wrong with the Asus you picked. Others may favour the GB mobos with the 3 year uk warranty and dual BIOS. I noted your blue scheme and have switched to a black and gold theme. I look forward to seeing what you settle on......

Hope this helps :)

Regards the fan controller, I think the mobo has one built in

Regards the i5, I don't want to ruffle any feathers, your basket is much cheaper, but the cost isn't that much of an issue, I'm within budget with the i7 choices and I do like the idea of future proofing to some extent. I had my last rig (Q6600 Quad Core) for 6-7 years!

The Asus does have a good fan control software, but most boards seem to have decent fan control these days (either via windows based software or via BIOS control).

The MSI Mpower is missing DVID offset from what I remember.

A Gigabyte board such as a Z77X-D3H or Z77X-UD3H does have it all.

It's down to you bud. If you think you will make use of the Hyperthreading on the i7 then fair enough. For gaming there is no real advantage, Hyperthreading has been around for quite some time and it's pretty common for games and some apps to run better if it is disabled. So in my eyes that "extra" £80 to get the Hyperthreading is wasted and could go towards another monitor or pump it into other components.

The Patriot RAM isn't low profile so could be an issue with your chosen heatsink if you wanted to add more later. Granted it's not a bad price compared to some 1600mhz kits and the blue colour does tie in nicely. Think I'd go with the dual channel 16GB Viper, that's the most you can use without having a Pro licence for the OS.

Really look forward to seeing your final basket, we'd love to see a build log with pretty pics. It would help your post count too, once you surpass 100 posts you might well qualify for free P&P for future purchases :D

You've thrown me some curveballs, but I'm still thinking the original basket is where I'm going with it.

I like the fact my chosen PSU states that it's basically fanless at low power outputs.

i7 vs i5... screw it, I can afford the i7....

I also like the ASUS bios interface, it looks good, and that mobo comes with wireless.

Might switch to 16GB of RAM though.

I do like my color scheme too :)

The only thing I'm not sure about is clearance around the heatsink for the ram... might have to look into that further.
