Ok so my 5850 came today, which is an upgrade from my 4850. I have a big problem. Whenever i have the 5850 installed, my pc randomly just turns of at any time. It could be 10 seconds into boot, or 1 hour of the pc being on..It's totally random. It doesn't happen with my 4850 installed. Also, sometimes when i boot up (50% of the time) the monitor shows nothing...It's like it can't recognise the graphic card.

I am stuck and don't know what to do. It's not temps, they are super. So, any ideas what the heck is wrong??

Specs are in sig

Would advise an RMA job to be honest, if the 4850 is doing fine then it's the 5850.

Sounds either borked or power issue to me.

If you're having issues with eratic startup time, that's before the drivers are loaded as far as I know.

Are you connecting the PSU directly into the card, or are you using cable extensions?

I'm not familiar with the 4850, do they require a similar wattage to power them?

To me it sounds more borked than anything though. RMA it but make sure you take photos before posting, trust me, they may come in useful.....

My first thought would be the PSU not being able to powe the 5850 and causing the cutting out, but as you've got a good 600w PSU I'd find that hard to believe. Do you have another PSU you could use to rule it out?

I just plugged the two molex from the PSU into the card. I only have a 400w corsair as backup, so i don't think it's a good idea trying that? Like i say, my 4850 runs fine :S

I did notice when i carefully looked at the artwork on the graphic card, there were a few light marks and scratches. Looks like somebody sent it back, and it got sent to me...

Get it tested on the 400W corsair. Its good for a stock speed (or light overclock) 8200 with a stock 5850.

Otherwise, download MSI afterburner, and get your 5850 underclocked to 1.0v and 550core, 800 mem, which should put it at taking barely any more power than a 4850.

I could run my 5850 using a dell 350w psu, providing I didn't try and run any games or anything it was stable - so you should get away with a 400w for testing purposes.

My first thought is power related too - that's exactly the type of problem I was having until I upgraded the psu. But your psu should be fine, unless the rails are unstable or something.

You say molex, but do you mean 6 pin PCIe power connector? You should have two of these on your PSU (one connector will have a the option to add two more pins for an 8 pin).

If not, give it a go with an CX400W, though you may need to use a single molex to PCIe power adapter, as the Cx 400W only has one PCIe power connector, I believe. A good quality 400W PSU (like the corasir) should be able to run an unclocked system like yours with a 5850.

What brand/model is your PSU specifically?

EDIT: according to your sig OCZ right? give your spare one a try I once bought a 1000W OCZ and it's worse than several quality 800W I've had from other manufacturers, there's a possibility it could be power related.

If it still does it with the other PSU though don't hesitate to return the card while you can under the distance selling act, especially if you suspect it's a 2nd hand RMA job being passed on as new.

Yeah my PSU is the OCZ SS 2, 600w.

PSU _should_ be fine but I had this issue with a 500watt OCZ Stealth eXtreme on an old PC - same issue it would randomly turn off even tho I was 100watt under of the rating for the PSU. Changing PSU sorted it.
