Am I right in thinking this would be ok. I know it would probably shorten the life of my cpu by so many years but i never plan on keeping it for 5+years. Buying a £40 cooler takes the point out of buying a cheap cpu.

Its not that it would be on full load for any amount of time either.
 
Regardless of OK or not that temp is just not normal for a 6400 with stock cooler @ default speed!! I'd reinstall the heatsink and reapply some quality thermal paste to it.

It will still work at that temp but it may not perform as well as it should.
 
in that case i'd probably say it's about right! possibly slightly higher, but it's going to depend on case cooling and ambient temp, also the voltage you are putting through it! iirc the stock intel cooler isn't that good!
 
i've run my e6400 happily at 65/66 for 2 days of prime before, completely fine - people have to remember this is the die temperature not the mobo readings and its not too unusual to find people running c2d at mid 60's on full load.

I dont know the max temp for these but im sure thats way too high, surley its throttling?
