Hi,

Although I have written my impressions on another post (http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18478491), I thought I would share them also in a new post.

My initial project was to sell my PS3 and old Zotac HTPC and build a new one with some gaming capabilities mainly in games coop or split screen (Fifa13, NBA, Dirt etc). I was between the Intel and AMD route and because I didn't have the money to get a discrete GPU, I decided to try the A10-5800K. To be honest, after reading this forum and asking opinions here, the decision was not an easy one and I was feeling like taking a risk.

Anyway, the system was built during the weekend and I am quite surprised about how good this little AMD diamond is.

What I don't like:
1) In the Silverstone GD04 placed in an open drawer, leaving the APU at full max speed (4000MHz) and with stock cooling things can get really really noisy. However, when lowered at 63% through the AMD drivers, everything is fine. I have also ordered a Scythe Shuriken rev B but havent installed it yet.
2) I don't know how to install the USB3 drivers (Asrock FM2A85X Extreme4-M)

What I liked and expected it be so:
1) Installation was easy and painless like in Intel systems apart from the USB3 drivers (I also have a 3570K+7970)
2) System feels as fast as the Intel one in everyday use (web surfing, music playing)
3) HD content plays great (XMBC 1080p content)

What I liked and was surprised by it:
3D gaming is feasible even at 63% and 1080p!!! So far I have tested the following games and all played fine:
1) Fifa13 high settings no AA
2) Sine Mora high settings
3) Worms Revolution high settings no AA
4) Sleeping Dogs normal settings no AA
5) Alan Wake custom settings (like low-normal no AA)
I am also planning to test NBA13, Batman Arkham City and Dirt.
Do the games look worse than the desktop? Of course they look, but they are still nice, because of the high res and the normal-high settings. At least compared to the PS3 games, I can say that they look better or equal. Maybe I am impressed by playing on the big TV and cant notice the jaggies, but games look great even at normal-medium settings as long as the res is 1080p.

This is of course just my opinion mainly for people who are in the same dilemmas as I was some weeks ago...

Hi There,

I am in the process of building a LanBox and was hoping for alittle advice

I would like to go with the 5800K or maybe even something cheaper over Sandybridge. It will be mainly for games however and I use the Res 2560x1440. Do you think think Trinity is up to it?

Also very important to point out is that I will be using a dedicated GFX card, either a 480GTX or a 6970AMD?

Thanks for your input! :)

Hi!

As you increase the resolution the more important is the graphics card. So assuming you pair the A10 with a decent VGA, I think you will be fine.
However if games are your main purpose and you will have a discrete GPU, you should also check the Intel route. Even a i3-2100 would be great for games.

This is a bad idea. The sole reason to go for the A series chips is the integrated graphics, and you won't be using those.

I'd look at something at least like an Pentium G2120 / Phenom II 965.

It's not such a bad idea, but I agree that the Intel route might be better if there is a discrete GPU.

Hi again!

Here are my impressions with some more games:
1) Dirt Showdown plays great at 1080p high Q (no AA or advanced lighting)
2) Batman Arkham City plays great at 1080p normal Q.
3) Fifa13 plays good at 1080p high Q, not great. There is a very small lag sometimes due to fps drop.
4) NBA13 plays great at normal Q

If you want me to test anything else just say so!

Well to put it another way, it'd be one of the worst options to consider spending your money on at that price point.

YOUR BASKET
1 x AMD Piledriver FX-6 Six Core 6300 3.50GHz (Socket AM3+) Processor - Retail £99.95
1 x AMD A10-5800K Black Edition 3.80GHz (Socket FM2) APU Trinity Quad Core Processor (AD580KWOHJBOX) £95.99
1 x Intel Core i3-3220 3.30GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £89.99
1 x AMD Athlon X4 750K Black Edition 3.40GHz (Socket FM2) Trinity Quad Core Processor (AD750KWOHJBOX) £64.99
Total : £362.32 (includes shipping : £9.50).

The other options listed here to compare against the A10 are either better performing cpus or are better value for money.

Agree! On the other hand, I am personally impressed by how balanced this product is

Yep, bang on for what you're using it for! and could still add a high end discrete gpu later if you wanted to.

Have you got some fast ram in there? performance scales with faster memory.

2100MHz...I think its enough, right?
Also noise was quite solved with the Shuriken cooler.

The A10 5800K works fine as a gaming APU you can easily clock the graphics from 800 to 1000 MHZ and core frequency to 4400 MHz on stock air cooler with 2133 ddr3 memory set at 1.65v although it's better to buy a better cooler to decrease noise & temps.
If you want to overclock it further the core voltages need to be raised to ~ 1.5volts in the bios and to get any form of stability with 2400 memory the motherboard north bridge voltage must also be increased.

Its quite an impressive product for the price, great for an entry level build and somewhat scalable to. Its the shape of things to come I think. AMD and Intel are already at it, and it looks like Nvidia wants some of the action as well with its own GPU / ARM CPU combo.

Guys, is there a o/c guide anywhere for a8/10?
Need to find out if I would gain much by going for 2133 instead of 1886 RAM...
And then need to check how to o/c CPU and igp....

Are you playing with an Xbox 360 controller?

I don't suppose you could test Diablo 3 with the settings maxed?

I have the A8-5600K, which is the one Black Edition down from the A10-5800K. I can only run Diablo 3 on mid settings and thats with my HD 7770 running as the deciated GPU.

Thats what I thought too until turned everything up and walked into a dungeon or had a lot of enemies around me. The FPS drop low enough for the game to become unplayable.

I'm running this at 1080 res on my 47" TV. Then again this is an AMD APU not an Intel i7 or i5, so it could be a CPU bottleneck and not GPU.
