Purchased an ATI 9600XT from a member here and it arrived this morning.

Its going in an old PIII system that my missus uses for work stuff, word pro and accounts etc.

However, I went to fit it this morning and removed the ATI Rage Pro Turbo that was in there already.

Looked at the AGP slot on the mobo and it appears to be "back to front", as in the smaller slot is nearer the backplate of the PC case.

Never seen this before, whats that all about?.

The 9600 physically fits in the slot facing "the wrong way", but I dunno about trying to boot it up like that with the monitor cable threaded through the slot at the back of the case and into the card itself ( probably not a good idea!!! ).

The ATi Rage Pro Turbo does seem to have the slot in a different place going on these pictures:

Reading up on it more...

EDIT: Okay read this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accelerated_Graphics_Port

Scroll down to compatibility. It seems the cards with the slot at the front are 3.3V and the slot at the back are 1.5V.

I doubt yours would fit backwards or if it did you'd most likely damage it.

Some newer cards like nVidia's GeForce 6-series or ATI's X800-series only have keys for 1.5 V to prevent them from installing in older mainboards without 1.5 V support. The graphic cores can only handle 0.8 V for AGP8x and 1.5 V for AGP4x and will be damaged by 3.3 V slots. Some of the last modern cards with 3.3 V support were the nVIDIA GeForce FX series and the ATI Radeon 9500/9700/9800(R350) (but not 9600/9800(R360)).

Cheers guys.

Bad news but at least I havent fried it. :p

I should have been more thorough in checking, I just whipped the side of the case off, spotted an AGP card and assumed the 9600 would fit.

My mistake.

Thanks for the "heads up" though, appreciate it.

Try and get your hands on a 3.3V 9800. Better then the 9600 anyway ;)

Do a search for "ATi 9800" on the popular auction site and you'll get a lot of models that support 3.3V AGP there.

So any geforce FX or geforce 4 card or any ATI 9500 / 9700 series card you can be sure will work (9800 series youll have to check core revision).

Cool, but will it not matter that a card like a 9700 is an AGP x8 one, like Mr Paul said, if my mobo is only capable of running at early AGP x1/x2 speeds?.

Or will it just step down as it were, to run at that speed?.

what the fudge is going on here? if a 9600xt won't fit in the slot i can assure you there is no version of any 9800 that will.....

No no no, the 9800 series supports 3.3V AGP slots. Everyone should read the wiki link I posted. The 9800 does support 3.3V AGP slots. It should work.

Mr.Paul it is not 1X or 2X that is the problem, the AGP standard went from 3.3V, the type on Draegers motherboard, to 1.5V which is the latest. If the motherboard only supports 2X speed then the 8X speed 9800Pro should run at those speeds. It's like a 16X PCI-E card running in a 4X PCI-E slot.

If someone knows for sure that I'm wrong then please correct me but I am going on what wikipedia says and it's generally correct on such things.

It does, please read the post in full next time.

Draeger you'll have to make sure that the 9800 you buy is the earlier 350 chipset variety. That has 3.3V support. I think you can tell by the notches in it.

From reading wikipedia again the 9800Pro are the 350 chipset and the 9800XTs are the 360 chipset. Make sure you get a Pro and you'll be okay.

voltage has nothing to do with it. it doesn't fit in the slot. end of. :)

That's a 9800Pro with support for both types of slots. It can take 3.3V or 1.5V. That's what I meant.
