My alternator has gone

Crusty 320d isn't it, that he doesn't even like? Definitely would have just stuck one on from a breaker, if it breaks again who cares just put another one on.

I don't have time for such tomfoolery

I dont have the knowledge or the tools either...so stop spouting BS just to be clever :p

What's BS/tomfoolery about saving £400 on an old car not worth spending money on?
Alternator on a BMW involves 2 bolts and loosening the tension off the belt for a second, an hour if you did the job very slowly.

All the videos show that this is not the case?....

Last one I fitted for someone was a £500 new price for a merc sprinter :(

Even my last vectra was north of £300 retail

Unless its significantly different to the m54 clarkey is right. Take the airbox off, unbolt ps reservoir, release tension from the belt, 3 big bolts, 2 wee bolts for the air duct and it comes off. If I can do it in an hour ( which I did on Saturday....bolt complications aside) anyone who does it for a living could do it in half the time.

A refurbed alternator is absutely fine....its no different to buying a refurbed caliper.

I paid £600 for a power steering pump and alternator for mine when the power steering took the alternator clutch with it, doesn't sound too far off.
