Following on from my previous thread about my ankles (http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17554472&highlight=ankles), I went out and purchased a couple of decent ankle supports, guy in the shop was really helpful too. And i'm still going to the gym twice a week doing work on them too.

Had a few football sessions since and all was going well, until this happened Monday:

same old story, lost my footing while playing, all my weight fell on it, heard it crack as it happened. Dad's just told me to give up football otherwise i'll come home with a broken leg soon, i dunno what to do :(

You're only young aren't you?

I wouldn't be giving up footy at that age but I love it. Its down to you at the end of the day, there's a distinct possibility that you'll affect your ability to walk forever...

i love it too. Like i said in the previous thread i played from the 5-16 in sunday league football every week. Never had any problems then apart from osgood schlattens whatever its called in my knee. Seems like the few years i did nothing football-wise has buggered me up and everytime it gets better i just know its eventually gonna go again

That's bad news mate, I know a guy who now has a limp because he continued to play football despite messing his knees and ankles nearly every game. And because he now has a limp he's been told that it'll affect his hips as well when he gets older. Why don't you take a break for a while and then decide? :) Maybe you're just pushing yourself too much and your body just needs a rest.

I think its more likely that after the long lay-off out of the game your body just isn't up to it.

Take it easy, do easier sports to get your all-round fitness up. Do some swimming, cycling, rowing, etc.

thing is ive been going to the gym 2/3 times a week for the last 18months. occasionally play squash, badminton, golf. Sometimes go swimming and jogging. It's not as if ive started football again after doing literally nothing for years

I missed your last thread, but I'll offer my advice in here.

I've broken my right ankle twice, and sprained it a few more times after that. Was that photo taken Monday? Unfortanetly you've missed the most important time as far as recovery goes. It doesn't look like it's broken, just a mediocre sprain. Did you get x-rayed?

Day 1/2

RICE - Rest, Ice and Elevation for 1 hour periods 3 times a day for the first two days. If you can't do it that much with work etc, then twice on an evening will suffice.

Days 3-7

2 washing up bowls, one filled with ice water, the other with hot water. 2 minutes submerge in cold water, 1 minute in air, 2 minutes in hot water. Repeat x5

Days 7-14

Again 2 washing up bowls, but 1 minute in cold, 1 minute air, 3 minutes hot. Repeat x5. On day 7 start DAILY exercises on the bad ankle. A wobble board is ideal at ~£15, but if not you can do these:

Stand on bad leg
Stand on bad leg with eyes closed
Stand on bad leg with eyes closed holding something heavy above head
Stand on bad leg and bounce a tennis ball off a wall in front of you
Sit on edge of bed, cross bad ankle over lap, draw alphabet with big toe

Stay away from ankle supports, you need to train your ankle to correct itself if it senses a turn in future. The nerve to the central spinal column is badly damaged so when you are even slightly turning your right foot out to the side, the brain isn't recognising this and you are going completely over on it.

Any more questions give me a shout :)

Forgot the C ;) Need some good old tubi grip round it for compression.

Know the feeling bud, im having to delay rugby league and maybe american footy friendlies cause i've knackered my knee in again. Injuries suck :(
