I work at a small company and our server room currently resembles one of those old stereo systems with loads of wires snaking all over the place and servers piled on top of eachoter. We need to start a new round of upgrades and are thinking about moving to rackmounted servers. Anyone got any thoughts on the pros and cons? Also, what about buying these servers. I’ve not bought this type of server before and looking on places like Google and shopping.com, it looks like a choice between the vendor sales (HP, IBM, etc.) or a reseller like Pyramid or it247.com. Any recommendations?

IBM servers!!!!

Its easier to get the professionals to help to setup a server than to DIY.

Do i stiill need extra pro services?

Just don't touch Dell, for gawd's sake. I've done a lot of datacentre work - they need hard reboots more than anything else

HP are pretty good.

i'm not too sure about it247.com but i know for sure that IBM and HP offer 24hrs technical support and they can advise you on configurations.

I am pleased to inform you we have opted for IBM system x3550 7978 which should do the job of the current three servers in use. Full specs can be seen on http://www.it247.com/Product/29-7978K1G/IBM_System_x3550_7978_Dual_Core_Xeon_5140_233_GHz.htm

However I opted for a reseller like IT247.com rather than a vendor because we shall have other associated hardware and peripherals that may not necessarily be IBM. I think its a good idea to have service and advice for all, from one source only...

Thanks for all the suggestions :)

Good man, however I shudder to think what miniscule percentage of next years annual bonus that accounts for..

You'll need to remove the link though - competitor I'm afraid.

HP each and everytime, I do lots of work for very big IT players, HP's the way to go, remember you'll need 3phase coming into the room as well for racks, heat psf is something to think about too, channeling for power and ethernet needs doing, if your going high density, get aircon

For a single server? That's complete rubbish! We have a rack full of servers and a separate cabinet full of switches and routers and still don't need three phase!

@OP, to be honest, those specs aren't brilliant. We've just bought a HP DL380 with double the RAM and a faster CPU for £1200. Can't recommend HP servers enough :)

the way I read the OP was that the room was already chocked and the exsisting stuff would be racked - if they've got a lot of servers - and it sounds like they do, 3 phase would be sensible, its easier todo when the racks go in than doing it later anyway, its sensible, cost effective, and will allow for a higher density of servers should the need arise

why go for rackmount, when you only have one server ?

yes, it's nice, and makes cabling easier etc,
but there always seems a slight premium for 1U boxes.
(and sometimes a 4U box is better value)

I know a few places that just put boxes on those chicken wire racks,
drop a few consoles on the middle rack and tidy the cabling into a wall mount cabinet.

.

Cosidering there are different makers of these racks, I went for Dynamode Lx Range - 42U - 19.
and seriously considering the server: IBM System x3850 8864

We are also considering HP StorageWorks DAT 72 USB External Tape Drive as back up

There are alternative cheaper versions of the above by Sony, so am I paying more just for the brand names of other makes such as HP and IBM, or are better known brands more relaible. Any experiences would be most welcome before I advise the accountant to part with the money!
