ok finally managed to get a BT engineer to come out this week via o2 and on the day they ran the 24hr test at o2 it was fine all day, the day before they admitted a fault between the dp and the slammer in exchange hence the connection problem.

i have been getting problem for two years now (intermitent fault) to clear my fault i have to lift up the handset and put it down again but sometimes a few evenings would go by and it would be alright last year in october the process began with o2

i have had two routers, 4 adsl filter, 2 rj11`s, pbx adapter, i have wired the socket which is the main socket with no plate myself (iam a telephone engineer btw)

last night i was told i would have my call escalated to bt but then today some dude rang me and asked me to try a line test again but i said no f`ing way get me a proper line engineer.

they really sent me round in circles or at least tried

so they come out this week.

bare in mind i have had about 75kbs-180kbps-245kbps for ages with temporary cut offs and on the day of the 24hr test when i was seeminly flat lining for weeks at 245kbps i get an unheard off 302kbs ! a big step up for me.

seriously i need my connection for work and obviously steam games or drm, internet.my pc becomes an attractive decoration.

then tonight two days from the engineer coming.. my speed

Flat lining for 30 mins now at peak times --- 423KBS !

may not seem much to some, but 2.7k to main exchange distance on old lines im more than happy with that and i dont pay loads..

but seriously that is very fishy dont you think, two years on and off, when i first got the connection for the very first month i got near 300kbs

are they playing games? will the engineer find nothing even though there system reported a line fault on friday even with all my kit unplugged

will be interesting to see. i just want a consitent connection TBH but im seeing 50% performance increase at one point it peaked at 600kbps for a few seconds my exchange is only meant to handle 3.0mb max for me at very best

Maybe, maybe not.

I had intermittant noise on the line, the engineer came out, first of all listened to see if there was noise and only then went to the van to get his tester which immediately showed up a fault.

Bottom line, they have a mandate to provide a clear voice service - and nothing else. It's possible there is a cable fault and they've just swapped you onto a new pair (which is what the engineer did with me - the fault was between the cab and the exchange, he was just happy he didn't have to climb the pole outside my house!)

If your fault is intermittant, it's quite likely it's a water related problem - cable joint may have gotten water ingress or similar, the BT Hawk tester they have shows these things up straight away the hard part is getting them to actually use it...

I've had a similar types of intermittent faults for the last 3 odd years. Come the winter months and my speed will nose dive from a steady 5.5+ mps to around 256kps. Over the years I've had numerous engineers, 1 whose advice was to disconnect the adsl router, WTF this line is only used for broadband access, I have a separate line for voice calls.

Back in November the speeds once again nose dived so I logged a call and requested a broadband engineer not a telephone engineer and the guy who turned up was very good and interested as he himself had had a similar problem. The Hawk showed a line fault immediately and he went to work, finally diagnosed the problem as the junction box between my house and the street and my BT faceplate as being faulty. Since January I've not had any problems and now connect at around 6mps.

Moral of the story is that there are some good engineers around, unfortunately you have to keep on calling till the good one turns up.
